Official Coldplay Tour - 5.31.03 - 6.02.03 - Hollywood Bowl

Tue Jun 03, 2003 11:52 am

Hey everybody. Can't wait to report on the experiences we've had here in LA...but alas...it's 10:35am and we're checking out in 25 minutes so that Weston and Jon can buy these scooters they've been searching desperately for (during the whole tour)....so they can ride around with dorky helmets, wearing cut offs and tennis shoes at the venues. Then we're heading to San Diego.

Just wanted to post something so you'd know I'm still here. It's been so cool having the "B Sides" of the family out here to hook up with. (hugs and kisses and tears) They flew back early this morning and we won't see them till New York.

Today, on the trip to San Diego, I'll attempt to pull video clips from 4 tapes taken at the historic Hollywood Bowl (Beatles played there), search for the best captures, save them as pdf's, reopen them in photoshop, crop, edit and post....the process takes hours and hours because I'm too dang selective....and I end up with way too many images.

Thanks to all who've shown interest, have joined the board and have even bought CD's at these amazing venues...very cool to have met some of you. We're having too much fun. Thanks. Boyd

p.s. if in these journals, there's a bit of detail...and a bit of what seems to be bloatacious, editorial content... consider that I'm not the band; I'm in a communication role...I'm attempting to journal what's accurate and what I see happening. If you meet my kids, they're not going to walk up to you and say, "hey, we met Sheryl Crow last night". If I talk about the encounter, it's because...it happened. I think her reaction was significant and falls within scope. Think of me as a diary from an inadequate reporter/fan/dad....like a family vacation. whatever. Thanks.

---------------------
New Update...a few pics; many more to come;

So I unplugged the cable modem last and dashed out the door....we drove to pick up Weston and Kevin who failed to purchase the scooters because the owner never showed up. We drove 3 hours to Dan Diego where Eisley had a terrificly, beautiful show. (report later). We packed up and drove 7 hours to Las Vegas where we were tucked into our cheap hotel room beds by 4:00am. We were back on the road by 10:30 and drove hour after hour after hour to arrive here in Denver - i dunno...at 1:30 am? It's 3:30am now and I'm not right in the head from no sleep and working all day on images for this post. I really need sleep. Here goes:

So, after we hooked up with our family, we did stuff...like eat.

Here's us driving.

And then we drove to the venue that afternoon.

That's how cool this structure looks from the back. (that cool)

The Beatle-walk. Because the Beatles walked down these steps.

We party hard.

The Hollywood bowl from the top. I think that's Coldplay or some
band warming up down there.

Zooming in. (same view)

So, we all hang in the dressing and eat and waste time.

Weston and Jesse.

my bad panaramic view. It's hack.
----------------

I do have many, many more. But it's 4:06 here and I'm starting to get a bad case of dry socket....in all facial orafices. goodnight. I promise that when I wake up, I'll return to this. bd

----------------

10:25am Denver. I'm awake in a dark room with 3 sleeping gorilla's, but I'm back up and at my post. If i don't wake them, I will live. If I wake them, surely one of them will subdue me and I will be consumed by the essence of their monkeyness.

----------------

She's always under her Rhodes putting that sustain pedal on.

It's that weird little man again. Who IS that guy? She always shows me
and laughs.

Chauntelle.....calm....doing whatever...

You'll see them in two wardrobes...hence the two different shows.
I don't have time to make two separate posts...and they wouldn't
let me video the second "show" - though I was able to capture the
rest of the surrounding happenings.

the new Kodak moment...they're always messing with "in-ears".

He's wearing the suit coat he wore at Dave's wedding. This must be monday night's show.

Techoids hang stage right.

Trying to shoot more of these lurchy rhythm machines lately.

We usually get just a few minutes for a line check at these shows.
Ocasionally, CP's crew is ahead of schedule and Eisley get's to go
through 2-3 songs. Either way, nobody ever gets stressed.

Chauntelle captured from ants eye view.

Stacy developed a cold on this stage which got worse the next day...

Sherri's brands. (well...a few of them)

Sherri - grrrrr. She's going to make me take this off. A few of you
can see it. I just thought it was cute...

This is still warm up. The video from the live show is boring...
I'm too far back and in the center.

---------------

still working on it....another 30 minutes should do it...

---------------

You understand, the openers at amphetheatres come out while it's
still light outside. There's no presence or drama...other than what
you bring with you to the stage.

Somehow the crowds always seem to warm up...

Sherri playing....uh, some song.

It's getting dark enough to see a bit of Brian's lighting on the band...
though I never noticed it until I saw the video.

What's that..a one? There were all kinds of numbers coming at us.

managed to get a few close ups.

I like these green lights...

Eisley out....I like to see how many peeps got to hear them...some venues fill up quicker; Hollywood bowl really didn't. Still, the reception
was amazing. Sheryl Crowe is somewhere out there...and she found Chauntelle. (ref. Kim's b-sides comments i think)

hanging out after their set by one of the merch booths.

yes, that's Eric Pulido from Midlake (midlake.net)...and McKinzie also
flew down for the show! (got to find a clip so he won't feel dissed);
and on the left is friend Kyle who drove 600 miles from Arizona
to see the band.

Tim Taber say's hi. (floodgaterecords, founder of 90's band -
Prayer Chain, met Tim at Cornerstone Fest last year.)

Kevin Westenberg. He shot the cd images and promo images for
Eisley, but....omgosh: kevinwestenberg.com

---------------
heading to the venue in 2 hours (red rocks). Have to get ready. Will post more before leaving. This one is a big one to cover....there's more from the LA visit still to come. bd
----------------

Here are mind-bending scenes from Coldplay's slightly bigger show. I'm limiting this to shots of the crowd, etc since I don't want to take advantage of this and turn it into sordid gain for Eisley....plus I just want to respect Coldplay. We're so thankful to be on this tour. This gives you an idea of how huge this band is becoming...also, it gives you a sense of how tiny Eisley is.

It's more unbelievable live than you can imagine. This is show #2...also sold out. 40,000+ came to see them.
(cool...if just 20-30% saw Eisley, it's crazy, right?) The guy on the leftstanding up is Terry McBride - founder,
president of Nettwerk. The happy guy on the right is Troy Wallace. He was the first guy from WB to
fly down to see Eisley in Deep Elllum.

Here's some of us watching...except for the bubba in front of us with the ball cap thought he could dance.

another scene looking back up the hill.

an another...

the lazer/light show was the best ever perhaps at the Hollywood bowl.
--------

that's all I have time for now. off to Red Rocks! more later. bd

--------

Sunday, we went to Dave Holmes wedding. (Dave manages Eisley and Coldplay...thus the happy connection) There were friends shooting video, so I joined right in.

sitting in this beautiful courtyard adorned with flowers and foleage.

hanging out....these are in no order.

That's Darin from Nettwerk. also a great friend.

shot down our row.

-------------

Had a few pics of the wedding, but felt it might be best just to show Eisley.
Afterall, this is a forum about eisley...when and if they get married,
we'll post pics.

------------
more later. we're really dashing out the door now.
------------

The Hollywood Bowl show - at least the second show really rocked. (first show, the mains went out on their finale....Tree Tops which sucked very much) I think these were important shows for the band...well, think about it; LA is one of the mecca's for rock music....all the labels are there, bands, managers, A&R, publishers, friends of bands and labels and managers, savvy rock music lovers...and...well, you get the point;... gosh, I think everyone we actually know or have ever met from WB was at the second show; not like there was pressure, but...it seems important to be loved by as many as possible within your label; This was our 5th or 6th trip to LA since November; I've forgotten more people than I remember meeting. For many of them, this was the long awaited show....their chance to hear Eisley and find out whether all the hype was real. Thankfully, all we heard were great reviews.

Monday morning, we had to be at an web-based music entity called, "Press Play" - soon to be named "Napster". Yes, they're legit and they're all about music...promoting it, selling it, etc....they write articles for the bands they like....they sell on line subscriptions and advertise for their bands by buying feature ad spaces from Yahoo and AOL....10 million potential viewers or something crazy like that. Anyway, they looked Eisley up because they're crazy about the music. The band tracked about 3 songs live which can be accessed in a few weeks. We'll keep you posted.

Here are some shots from that morning.

Thanks. I'm still way behind....San Diego and now one Red Rocks show.

We were there and got pressed for time because headphones
didn't really work (out). But they were super nice and there
were people there just to hear the session...like these guys
from Thiland? no...somewhere in the Orient. Anyway, they
were representing MTV magazine in their country and took
a photo for the publication. cool.

Lukas is my new media contact guy at WB. Lukas is great. Helps me solve
problems and makes things happen.

I think they're from Thialand....(sorry if I'm wrong...I think I
am wrong.) visiting LA; they knew the editor - Rick Albano,
and wanted to hear Eisley. They were so sweet. Took photos
to put in their MTV magazine.

it looks like she's giving Weston a Q to do something. These recordings
will be out there in a few weeks...advertised on AOL and Yahoo...and I
guess they'll have the stuff on Press Play which is becoming the new
Napster. Confused? I'll keep us posted.

She woke up sick that morning...and wanted to sleep; luckily
Kim was here and gave her some kind of emergency tea...
and, of course, gave her no options. It all worked out...

jon....blurry.

The band tracked Telescope Eyes, Tree Tops and I Wasn't Prepared.
We're not sure how the tracking went; they couldn't hear out of their
headphones...well, Stacy said is sounded like static.

Robin on the left is the head of new media at WB...lounging at
Press Play with Chauntelle. I can't help but saying that all these
people are really great...Robin is from AUSTIN. (woo-hoo)

He was acting like a dork...because there was so much down time
because there were unexpected engineering problems. All these
people were watching and cracking up.

This is the music programming guy - Alex Luke. He started the
Adventure Club in Dallas that Josh now does. Everyone was so
cool...and they really love Eisley, which is why Eisley was here.

-------------
There are still clips from LA that I want to put up, but I'm going to have to backtrack later and post them....I have to find the right tape....and, for now, I'm 2 shows behind. Next up, San Diego; I'll work on them as we drive towards Chicago tonight after the 2nd Red Rock show; and the next day too; I'll work like a fool the whole trip if I can con Kevin and Chris into driving like fools the whole way. boyd out.

You're doing great, Boyd. Smile I think it's incredible that your even doing it at all...with the hectic on-the-road schedual. Thanks for caring about us enough to share the experiences with us even if it's "bloatacious, editorial content"; it's something, you know? What other band has done this for its fans?

Agreed.

It's a very interesting perspective... the sort of thing one doesn't usually get to see. I don't see it as bragging or anything either. It's just fascinating to me.

And the extent to which you post pictures and comments is impressive. Thanks.

Still reading every post of yours and looking forward to the next. Glad you had the entire family in CA. and imagine how hard it was to send them off. Can you bring me up to date on Kevin Thornton (if he is still on board!) This forum seems to be the best link in keeping tabs on him! Still think you guys must be having the time of your life. Enjoy as there is no time like the present, but be safe.

It's fabulous, Boyd! Very Happy I just wanted to mention that I was fortunate enough to see the group on both nights (05/31 and 06/02). I especially enjoy how the band is mostly made up of siblings. I was with my younger sister when we went to get the band's signatures on their CD. (By the way, great CD!) I took a picture of Chauntelle, Sherri, and Stacy--the trio sisters! It must be wonderful being in the band together (special bond). It reminds me of the sisterly bond I have with my two sisters and I, dealing with each other's quirks. I have to add that they're leaving fans in Los Angeles! Razz Please continue posting. =0)

Boyd i think you've became a bit of a legend around this board since going on tour. all these updates and at silly times of the day (yes i'm accounting for time differences Wink ) and trecking across the world. any normal person wouldnt bother, i'm beggining to think that your avatar is a self portrait and that you arent actually human Laughing but its all good, carry on its interesting to know whats happening, especially since i'm so far away and i guess equally for those not so far away.

I, too, had the pleasure of seeing Eisley on both nights at the bowl, as I was working as an usher there this weekend. I ended up bumping into one of the girls and the guitar tech as they went to take their seats near the front. I told her that I thought they were absolutely wonderful, and reminded me of the Sundays .. well, she was just pleased as punch to hear that :)

I do hope I get to see the kids again soon, they were so so good.

And Weston, if you read this, that Rogers is mine!
