UK TRIP - Post 5 (Saturday - Weston Park. Pics O plenty.)

Tue Aug 26, 2003 4:42 am

I'm on a roll now. Come clean - you lost faith in me didn't you. But I'm
posting like a craaaazzy fool now. I realize I lost the battle and probably
lost most of the traffic from the UK since we'be been back a week now.
But..hey, if this just ends up being some obsessive family photo album
that we can look back on one day, it's cool.

Here are the beginnings of our Sunday (August 17th) - heading to
Stafford... Weston Park. And in case you didn't know or care, the 17 year
old drummer for this band's name is Weston. freaky huh. He played there
and his name is Weston...get it? It's the same. That's freakin' weird, yo.

------------------------------------------------------
and now, I'll go to work on posting. bd
-------------------------------------------------------

Basically, first there are a bunch of images taken in the back passenger
area of this interesting van/bus thing that Nettwerk rented for us. You'd
climb in the middle, but there was a front seat that didn't allow access to
the back. Jon (band member) and Rock (Nettwerk trouble-shooter/tour
manager, friend) and Paul (driver/new friend/great guy/musician) were
up front. Gear was stowed in a separate back end to the bus thing. ok.

I'm warning you....there are too many of these images.

Stacy is most annoyed out of any of them at being photographed. But, I can imagine how much it would suck
to have a video camera lurking at every step... she's pretty cool with it overall.

Weston was having a reflective moment... probably thinking, "I want food".

You can read the journal for the complete account of all our doings,
but just in case you're A.D.D., we picked up Dave after eating b-fast at
the Holiday Inn - and, well, he's always entertaining. We stopped at a
coffee shop in the area where Jack the Ripper ripped on innocent women.
yikes. But the cappuccino sucked. There were wicked grounds in the
bottom that I chugged and almost spewed. Dave is a joy to be
around...and pound for pound, is probably the best managers on the
planet. Now, let's join the virtual picture tour now still in progress...

Here is Dave reading the Blender story on Eisley for the first time. Then
he turned around and said, "nice article"...and started shooting video with his little digital camera...

...as seen above. That's why the girls are making such weird, funny faces.

I didn't blur these. I'm not going for some blurred look. This must be an
image of Stacy while changing metamorphic phase. Her isotopic density
looks to be about .00kilogigs. That's about when the bubbles start. I must
have turned the camera off when she morphed... and, well...the explosion.

I warned you; but, you know the rule...if I like it, it's going on the forum.
I'm not in the band...I can do this. If it were up to them, there would be
no images on the world wide web; but since I like the band and they let
me live with them...I post these. Besides, I think they're cute. Especially
Weston and Jon.

They're drinking hard apple juice. It's out of control. Rehab. It's the only
thing left to do.

I might be wrong, but I think this is the tower at some train station.

And this is cropping into the beautiful train station building.

And this is it from a distance...driving away. We're heading out of London
to Stafford. It took quite a while to get there. I will go back and look for
more images perhaps...but for the time being: ( I had a photo of what I thought at first was Weston Park, but Juan told me I was bogus. I was.

--------------------

captains log. stardate 0826003. It's thundering outside. A Texas shower
is steaming the slabs of molten asphalt deliniating our very manicured
lawn. The humidity is thick as a brick. Chauntelle just did her "LA Times"
interview. Weston is looking on a Radioshack website looking for some
wire he needs to replace. Sherri is out with mom and Collin doing
something. Stacy had to get the dog out - she (the dog) got scared
because of the loud thunder. I'm posting but want to go outside to see
how nice the yard work I did looks. Darin from Nettwerk just called to
give me the phone number for the photographer. He also wants "The
Winter Song" by FedX tonight. I'm no Ozzie and this isn't intertaining.
More pics later.

Here it is...in all it's beauty. Weston park - standing on the mainstage in full panorama. Is my date correct? Wasn't it the 17th? Hard to imagine that 12,000 will be standing here in a short while.

boyd, this picture? its not weston park, its the other one?
at least i dont think its the weston park that i was at and having then convinced myself that it was i who was mistaken, i looked at the limited pics that i took from the back and realised that weston park didnt have trees in the arena.

or is this a wasted explanation and you knew that already?

ah well still some good pics.

oh and a new ep for us and a new ep for u guys (which we can buy also) wow that will be cool. then a new album sometime as well.

hardly suprsing that wb want another usa ep release as they will want to keep people interested and get new fans aware of the band prior to release of the lp.

looks like it going to be a busy time for the band.

good luck

Tours/shows
So...where do bands tour - if they come to the UK? Like, where would a band like Hot Hot Heat or Polyphonic Spree go if they came? All in London? (surely not) Like, are there multiple clubs one would play in London or just one? Would it be smaller towns in the UK? What's a typical tour like for breaking bands in your country?

I'm just trying to learn. Thanks.

Travis - The Beatles - Radiohead.
Also, I wish Travis would have been at the V-Fest. I love Travis... and the Beatles....when are the Beatles coming back? John...George... no. I don't like it. It's sad. Want to go see Paul before something happens. I saw those guys on TV - live at Shea Stadium when i was very young. And on the Ed Sullivan show... I was stricken. They are the real pioneers of rock....they were the RadioHead of their day....though decades ahead of their time. Thinking about it all because a guy from Memphis burned a Beatles compilation CD and I was relishing the beauty, enveloped by their magic; even those last two songs....omgosh. Also, I just got through spinning OK Computer on vinyl, so...I'm all drowning in Euro-rock.

Cleaning house for LA times photographer arrival. bye.

they put OK Computer out on vinyl? is that a dumb question to ask? im not a vinyl-phile like some people. but just the thought of that is cool. i bought an OK Computer Poster today it is hanging over my bead as we speak. the Breakfast at Tiffany's poster over my computer is staring at it enviously. don't worry audrey you will always have a place in my heart!

Manchester seems to be a pretty good place for upcoming bands. White Stripes used to play there a lot before hitting it big.

Scotland doesn't have loads of venues, although it does like good music (it is the home of Travis, Belle & Sebastian, and Teenage Fanclub, to name a few)

Best bet for a great Scottish venue would probably be Glasgow, followed pretty closely by Edinburgh. Both have a good deal of clubs and both like fostering the arts - Edinburgh is actually wrapping up a month-long arts festival called the Fringe Festival. both cities also have very large student and teenage/young adult populations. and finally both cities sit on major motorways, have big airports, and have excellent rail service. If you had to choose between one or the other, Glasgow would probably have the edge over Edinburgh.

Aberdeen and Dundee both also have pretty substantial populations and large universities. Neither one really has quite the young adult population, though, as Edinburgh or Glasgow. There weren't too many shows that passed through Dundee that really interested me and my friends - and we went to school about 15-20 minutes away from there in St Andrews). we loved the all-night bakery in dundee, but that's neither here nor there Very Happy. Most of the shows that caught our attention were in Glasgow or Edinburgh, but the price tag also caught our eyes Crying or Very sad so if you do play Scotland or the UK try and be gentle on our wallets

You could also always try and get a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. that could draw a good crowd. it's essentially a month long celebration of the arts. It's got a lot of theater productions, and generally draws some good names in addition to folks looking to make a name. some of the musical acts at tthis year's festival: http://www.edfringe.com/shows/search.php?action=shows

Bands in the Uk usually play the major cities and then smaller twon clubs and Universities, starting off up North and then working their way down south by finishing with a gig in London.
I saw the Polyphonic Spree in Northampton at the Roadmender, which is a great venue - holds about 500 people (coldplay and the stereophonics have played here starting out)
Major city venues are stuff like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham (the Academy is the place here), Cardiff. But surely Boyd, you get someone to research this for you?!! ooh, and don't leave out Ireland...just found out i'm going to Uni in Dublin, so you'd better hop across the Irish sea and visit me! Hey, it's closer to Texas than London!!

Without knowing how much of a fanbase Eisley have in the UK, its hard to know where they should play! Whether they need to do a *really* small tour to attract attention, or whether V was enough advertising, I don't know.

I'm torn between conflicting opinions here.... on one hand I reckon Eisely need to get the NME to notice them so they can do a decent tour without worrying about selling tickets. On the other hand I wouldnt want the NME anywhere near them, for fear of them turning Eisley into the Next Big Thing™. They would certainly take the whole young-mainly-female-siblings thing for a ride.

I would suggest a very limited tour of small venues in major cities... of which i am no expert!

You could do a uni tour... students are great for that sort of thing. As long as you come and play at (or near) Warwick Uni then i'll be happy Smile
