I know this is a bit of a sweeping generalization topic but yea bear with it 1960s - British invasion - The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, etc 1970s - Hard Rock - Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, The Ramones, etc 1980s - New wave/rock - New Order, The Cure, The Smiths, Pixies, Depeche Mode, etc 1990-1997 UK(my favorite) - Britpop - The Stone Roses, Suede, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead (to some extent), Pulp, The Verve, The La's, Ocean Colour Scene, Badly Drawn Boy, etc 1990-1997 US - bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Silverchair, etc 1997 - Post-grunge, nu-metal, modern pop - Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, NSync, Ricky Martin, Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, etc of course there are other bands that go in these areas but i think those were the most popular at the time. _________________ http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=KevinNaaaaaa |

I'm in debate between: -the 1980's for the US underground (Sonic Youth, SST Records, et al.), New Wave, and the UK underground (The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, the C86 scene) and -1990-1997 UK for the shoegazing scene (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, ect.) I'd also like to add the 1990-1997 North America for the post-rock scene (which has roots in Canada) _________________ Coprophiliacs make sh*tty lovers. I found it slightly funny that you brought up all of the good music of each era except the most recent one. Every other time period had almost as much terrible mainstream stuff as is out there right now, but that's all that you mentioned under 1997 onward. Anyway, I'd probably go with that time period because of the albums that artists like Radiohead, Wilco, Grandaddy, Sigur Ros, etc. have put out lately. |

for me theres a few... the late 60's/early 70's stuff like pink floyd/genesis/king crimson Motown because...well it's some of the most amazing music ever early 80's thrash metal because it really started a whiole new level of what was deemed "heavy metal" 90's UK rock-because it's my favourite music _________________ |

So Cal Oasis wrote: Well i did only the mainstream popular acts of the period...and the good music that's around right now aren't really popular Yeah, I understand. I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't choosing that time period because of the artists listed, and the same things probably goes for the rest of the people who chose it. It's a sad thing to be reminded of, though, how there is so little in the way of good, truly mainstream music out today compared to previous years. Not that it affects me and my listening choices--it just keeps the already-taste-impaired masses from getting a chance to hear better music. Oh well... |

Yea it is a bit weird seeing how good music used to be the norm and mainstream _________________ http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=KevinNaaaaaa |
