after seeing this travesty of a halftime show where Ashlee Simpson was booed to no end, i got to wondering what the consensus on the board was to booing at a concert

I don't think booing is at all appropriate at a concert, if you go to a show, say, oh i don't know, Brand New, and you have to sit through this opening act called Eisley, there's no sense in booing them or say throwing a bottle at the stage, what does that accomplish? Do you feel like a big man making someone cry?
I have to go with the standard practice of : if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all

now when your favorite sports team is getting whomped...that's another story Very Happy

I disagree with booing... I wouldn´t like to go to a concert and listen to Ashlee simpson as an opening act. But I´m sure there´s people who actually want to see her because they enjoy her music. I don´t understand those people, but I respect them and I wont ruin her show just because I don´t like her music...

it happened recently to me, in the G3... Robert Fripp was opening. I was enjoying his show, it was amazing cuz he was playing this synths creating quite a spectacular ambience (it sounded so radiohead!). But a group of disrespectful jerks started booing and he had to get off the stage. It really pissed me off Mad

What about just staying silent?
Just, don't clap, or respond if you don't appreciate something.

It's honest, but doesn't attack.

That's my thoughts.

I think booing is rude. I'll boo in jest, but that's different. Maybe at a sports event, but I don't like it a concert.

This is what I tend to do. My band played a show the other night with 5 other bands. Random genres, some of which I do not appreciate. So I stayed in, bodyonly, to support, but didn't clap if I did not completely enjoy it. However I was put in my place a bit when the same bands came and complimented me on my band's set. they said, "really enjoyed you guys." So often we give compliments in return for a compliment. I was tempted to say, "You too." out of habit, but I just kept honest and said, "thank you very much."

i like the old saying of "if you don't have something good to say don't say it" and i think that applies to booing Smile

exactly, just stand there and wait for your band to take the stage, or go get a drink, or if you're in the back, talk to your friends, but don't screw it up for everyone else, that's just mean

When Eisley's set ended in Lawrence and Snow Patrol came on, I could have booed. But instead I just left.

And saw Eisley in a bookstore! Shocked Very Happy

Seriously, though. Booing is bad. Don't boo.

Let's say Sherri stumbled onto stage drunk, then cursed us out and said she supported Hitler. I might boo, if I wasn't laughing. Confused

Ive only been to two shows where a band were booed...and it was the same band. When I flew to sydney last april to see radiohead a band called Bumblebeez 81 opened for them and I'm being deadly serious they were so bad they sounded worse than a bunch of 14 year olds playing in a garage so the crowd started taunting them and the band didnt respiond well telling the crowd they were ****** losers and to F off so all you heard all the way through their godawful set was BOO or chants of "we want radiohead". This happened BOTH nights.

Normally I wouldn't condone it (booing a band) but I say they are fair game if they start telling a crowd to F off.

well extreme things, like bands saying ''man, you guys ****ing SUCK! you are the worst crowd we've ever played to...''
or like bands finishing early (although booing that is merely friendly banter i guess....)

well thats what i think. PERSONALLY. i haven't booed anyone yet, because i have only seen good bands live.

wait! i think i booed Eisley at V2003, and this guy with cameras and a small beard turned to me and in a gruff Texan accent said
''hay! those there kiyuds are miyun. don't you go booin' them, cos we came all the way frum Teyxsas to play to you guys..''
not really...although i stood close to Boyd...and he smiled at me. and i was thinking...why the heck is this guy filming and taking tons of pics? thats one crazy fan......yeah.

Definitely. I think performers need to respect the audience, too.

oh and.......

if these kids take their own time, and their own effort and their own whatever to go on tour with these bands, then they should at least deserve some credit for the guts of getting up there, and pouring out their own personal emotions and/or feelings in their songs. i know i couldn't do it. so respect them for the guts, even if you don't like the music.

yepper! Very Happy

I've booed many a time, and the bands more than deserved it.

Though the idea of the silent treatment is good, I doubt it will ever be used effectively. There's always going to be someone that will heckle the band through the whole set. Silence also doesn't have the immediate bite that booing does. Silence implies "what the f*** was that?"; booing implies "Get off the stage. We don't want to listen to you anymore." When you have an entire venue doing it, the effect is enormous.
