Paranoid Android v2.0 wrote: iPods are overrated. Yeah. It's cheaper to burn cds. You'd have to buy some contraption to play the songs in your car. One of them works by playing the songs through a radio station and it's poor quality.. _________________ I have no lover, and she hasn't the prettiest eyes. |

While i agree that ipods are overrated all you need to play them in your car is the same tape thingy you need to play CDs in your car. Assuming you have a tape player... I was given a 15g ipod as a gift. And as a gift it is freakin' awesome. It is not however what I would purchase. All it has over other players is space vs. size. I was really annoyed to discover that I can't create playlists or delete files without doing it through my computer. I was also annoyed (but not surprised) that you have to use ipod software and they have a proprietary music file scam going on. A really good mp3 player should function as a usb hard drive where you can dump some files and rock. I would suggest doing some comparison shopping on cnet.com and picking out one with the features you like. I would most like one that allowed voice recording. Then again, I'd like one that could take pictures, had an organizer, and was my cell phone. Why don't they make 40gb palms? They're holding out on us just so we'll keep buying the next best thing...I know it. _________________ hi, my name is dan, a librariman i am anyone can play guitar... |

I recently bought my first mp3 player, and I did a ton of research. I was pretty close to getting the iPod because it seemed the most solid and user friendly out of those I looked at. The price was what kept me from purchasing one. That and the fact that you have to use iTunes to put your files onto it (yuck). for about six months I researched off and on, and recently, durning one of my researching binges, I came across the iRiver H300 series. I ended up getting the 20 gig, which set me back $310. That's a bit more expensive than the regular 20 gig iPods, but it's comparable to the iPod photo. The player lets you view photos (but you can't view the photos and listen to music (lame)) read .txt documents (I have a whole book in there, as well as a bunch of chemistry notes. things I should have memorized. and you can read the text files while you're listening to music (rawk!)). you can also record through an internal mic, external mic AND a line in. This has made it possible for me to finally rip my vinyl (although I still haven't finished) in a really easy fasion. it also has FM tuner and the colors for the photos and menues are really nice. The best part is. If you have a PC, you can use Explorer to simply copy and paste your folders in. You can also organize your folders however you like, which is nice. the battery also lasts somewhere around 14-15 hours. oh and, with a new firmware update you can watch video. there's no official US firmware yet, but if you don't care about your warranty (which I do) and you can't wait (which I can and will) you can get the European or Korean firmware update which allows you to watch movies on the screen. after looking at all that, it seemed that it was the best choice for me, all things considered. Especially the price. the navigation is really easy as well. It doesn't have that cool space-aged iPod wheel, but it does have a pretty standard CD player style volume and track skipping er, square I guess you could call it. that's just my two cents. _________________ "strength is just an accident arising from the weakness of others." ~Joseph Conrad ---------------

A coworker friend of mine has an iPod and does not use iTunes to manage his stuff. I don't recall which program he uses, but I think it may be ephPod... _________________ Eric (the Deacon remix)

I have read complaints about the iRiver functioning properly, and Apple products are so reliable. So... my advice is to buy a 20GB iPod Clickwheel (they have better battery life compared to a 3rd generation iPod). The 20GB is only $50 more than an iPod Mini and it has about 16 more gigs. You can download utilities for iPod, and there are websites that have information so you can do anything from run Linux to use iPod as a remote and control all of your electronic devices. _________________ HST - RIP "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." - Jimi Hendrix "You may say I'm a Dreamer, but I'm not the only one." -John Lennon |

Sorry, I guess I should have been more specific. I don't want to use software as a go between from my computer to my mp3 player. I like the fact that my iRiver works as an external hard drive when I plug it into my (or any) computer. If you have windows XP you don't need to download any drivers, or it does it automatically which is really awesome. I went down to UC Sandiego for a week and stayed with my friend in his on campus apartment, and was able to share a bunch of my songs from my iRiver because they all had laptops with windows XP. If I had decided to go with an iPod I wouldn't have been able to do that if they didn't have iTunes or some other program. That's why I like the iRiver. it's not 'dummy safe' so you can view your raw data files. which I'm pretty sure is not possible on the iPod, I thought I read somewhere that the files are hidden when you plug it into the computer. oh and so far, I haven't read any complaints on the iRiver H300 series breaking down or losing battery life, which is pretty good if you ask me. _________________ "strength is just an accident arising from the weakness of others." ~Joseph Conrad ---------------

Quote: If I had decided to go with an iPod I wouldn't have been able to do that if they didn't have iTunes or some other program. See above. from what i'd read you couldn't do that with the songs you listen to. maybe things have changed since then. they're still over priced in my opinion, and money's a big factor when you don't have a lot of it. edit: and I belive you missed what I was saying. If you use explorer to put your music files on your iPod, you can't listen to them. you have to use a program in order to do so, which is something I didn't want to do. and is what I said in the first place. and are you sure that you can see the music files that you transfer onto your iPod through iTunes? I believe I had read that those files are hidden when you browse the external hard drive version of your iPod via your computer. Based on the video tutorial apple.com gives on the subject, it appears that the mp3 files are hidden unless you're in iTunes, so I doubt I would have been able to share my files, unless I hacked it I guess. Most of my friends have iPods and they had told me that the files are hidden from them, but it could (again) just be something with the older version. and just for good measure: Quote: Always use iTunes to transfer music to your iPod
If you want to listen to your music on your iPod, you must use iTunes to transfer your music. If you copy music files to your iPod in Disk Mode using the Finder or Windows Explorer you will not be available to listen to those files on your iPod. from: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/t9b.html _________________ "strength is just an accident arising from the weakness of others." ~Joseph Conrad ---------------
