I saw this debate on another forum and I thought it might be a good one to have on here. There's good and bad role models in both, but which would you choose as more valuable to a young person's education and future? To actually make it in either field is very hard, but if someone young is aspiring to make his/her living in it, you can't stop them. I wanted to see what other's say before I give my opinion. |

Them poker players always have shifty eyes...they can't be trusted around the little ones. _________________ Etsy ~ My Handmade Jewelries!!! Commentary on creepy online men who use fake photos of girly Fabiosos to get the ladies: "The longer my hair gets, the more sexy I have" - Jamie M. |

That question totally threw me off, to be honest... I...don't know...poker is gambling and I thought they don't teach kids to gamble anymore but sports players in general, typically, are all over-macho-man-ish. But gambling is fun and not being obese is great. I'm going with athletes because I'm totally biased. Our best family friends, the husband happens to be a sportscaster. |

what really makes it an interesting topic to me is that the two choices are so alike. here's some quick things to think about both do not require the need to go to college both require long hours away from family and friends both teach important, but different things (sports- teamwork, hardwork, exercize, poker- math, focus, people skills both are very high risk/reward both require you to be the best at what you do. to make it in a pro sport, you need to be the best, and only the best of the best get the big money. to make it in pro poker, you need to outsmart all of your opponents to earn a consistant profit both are always evolving, sports incorporates new styles of play every year as young players join a league, and it's the same in poker. as for role models, there's good and bad ones. i doubt many of you know any poker players... but in sports look at the good ones: tiger woods is a great example, so is ladainian tomlinson, or tom brady (minus the latest gossip..) you have the bad role models as well: barry bonds, or shaun merriman. both are steroid users. young players in both fields are almost praised by ESPN for their choice to drop out of college or high school. look at lebron james. look at how matt lienart was criticized for not dropping out. last years runner up in poker's biggest tournament was repeatedly pointed out as a college dropout. why is it that the media portrays dropping out of college as a good decision? i dunno, i have tons of thoughts about it. more than you're probably willing to read |
