You see a mate that's unhappy. Regardless of any conversations you may have within the next few minutes, do you tell them to "smile" or "be happy" or equivelant, or do you not? Whilst I want you to be honest, I have a feeling this thread may depress me further as alot of people might click "yes". _________________ She is handsome, she is pretty, she is the girl from Belfast City, she is courtin' one two three, please won't you tell me who is she? since you brit's are so backwards i'll assume "mate" means a guy. I usually try and keep a friend that's down active and occupied. My friend has just ended a relationship of 6 years, with the only girl he's been with. I've hung out with him for about 12 of the last 14 days. The last thing I want is for him to be on his own right now. If a guy wants to talk about his problems, he will. Don't force him to do it. |

Mate means friend. I know, but I wanted to talk about helping out a guy friend. Then I saw a window to make fun of the british, and bam - a bad joke. |

I hate when people tell me to smile. Maybe smiling does make you feel marginally better, but it's still fake if you don't actually feel like smiling. That's just a cheap way for friends to get out of giving real advice or sympathizing with someone. _________________ INTELLECT AND ROMANCE OVER BRUTE FORCE AND CYNICISM Smokemonster |

i dont like it when people tell me to smile, so im not going to tell them to. i think telling someone to smile sets them is a worse mood. _________________ www.flickr.com/photos/somecallmeallie www.envelopesandeggnog.blogspot.com www.somecallmeallie.deviantart.com |

Usually I'll say it sarcastically. I'll say something along the lines of "Don't get mad, get glad!" or "Turn that frown upside down!" and usually it makes them smile because something along those lines is totally weird coming out of my mouth. Then I'll turn serious and be there if confiding or advice is needed/wanted. |

gregorydymitrowicz wrote: Maybe not exactly those terms, but yeah, I try to cheer up my friends if they're unhappy. Two in particular are down a lot, so I listen to their problems and try to tell him things will get better. That's basically the approach I take. I try not to to pour on the positivity, because it usually just makes people feel worse, or like I'm trying to tell them something empty and fake. I basically put the positivity on in light shades. ha. Or at least try to lean in that direction. Listening usually helps a lot more than some advice can. I can be pretty good at looking at the bright side of things, so that can be helpful. _________________ My photography:www.jamiemphoto.com You can't spell awesome without emo...backwards! -Julie definingawesome (11:44:11 PM): Eisley shivers our timbers |

It encourages me when my friends care enough about me to notice that I'm down or upset. Even simply saying "smile" or "hey, cheer up" will make me feel special sometimes. Of course, some people don't care either way, or use the phrase entirely too much, or misinterpret my mood or my facial expression, and that does bug me. I get that a lot from students. "Miss, why are you in such a bad mood?" And it's like ... "Well, I'm not, but thanks for the vote of confidence?" I dunno. I don't say it to many people ... and it's often not those specific words. Usually, I'll say "Hey, you ok?" or something along those lines. _________________ Facebook & Twitter & Blog(ish)-type thing |

Telling someone to smile, no matter whether you know them personally or not, is a behavior fitting only of 50-year-old male perverts who use it as a way to hit on people who are too young for them. And thus, I do it all the time. _________________ If the end of the world has proper noodles I'll probably be okay with it. |

yeah, just flash 'em a smile, or do something stupid, or something that's bound to make them laugh, cause i hate it when people tell me to smile when i'm in a crappy mood, cause then i want to punch them... _________________ cynlovescandy wrote: kulvir wrote: I bet R. In my entire life, I've only seen one person smile because someone told them to. A fairly booky girl was told by the most popular guy in school to smile and she did. _________________ Power is only pain It’s probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in.
