Do you think that the fact that Eisley was surrounded by bands like Taking Back Sunday and NFG and other 'pop punk..ish' bands influenced the outcome of Combinations? Other than the fact that Chad help produce a little on this album...

No. If anything it made them less like those bands.

I would imagine Eisley was very much aware of the new attention they'd automatically be getting from their ties to those bands, perhaps aiming for a "safer" sound. Is that what you mean?

I don't think they were aiming for a "safer" sound AT ALL. Rolling Eyes They made the record they wanted to make.

It probably didnt effect their music too much, I was just wondering if it had crossed anyone else's mind.

Would it be so crazy to WANT to make an album more accessible, given the pressures of being on a major & having a whole new audience?

Just a thought. I haven't really thought it through myself so I'm not up for an argument, nor necessarily believe it myself. Razz

The first three tracks sound very new Switchfootish to me. Boyd talked a lot about Switchfoot's "wall of sound" with guitars. That's exactly what the first three tracks sound like.

I thought about it/wondered if it would make a difference. Before I saw the credits, I could hear the influence in the "Taking Control"....but it made me like the song even more.

Other than that, I don't think they were trying for anything really...The influences of those pop-punk groups seem to be pretty even with the influences of the other groups Eisley mentions as things they like.

I wouldn't personally compare them to any of these groups, but the best way to explain is to do so. For instance if Many Funerals sounds like Switchfoot, and "Taking Control" has some pop-punk influence, "ICBTFY" has some alternative/electronic/trip-hop (whatever its called...Bjork/Radiohead/Massive Attack), while "Come Clean" sounds Midlake/Decemberists.

Again, for me the combination of their influences makes an original collection.

I think that those bands (TBS and NFG) influenced the writing for sure. Two of the girls are with two dudes from those bands, so it seems like all the lyrics have more of a point to them and a message to get across about their relationships. That sounded weird. but besides that i think the music has gotten heavier and a little more mature, not that room noises and songs before that were immature, you can just tell that the girls have lived life more and have more to say about what is going on in their lives.

I think it all sounds great though. I am very happy with the way comb. sounds. Wink

Switchfoot "wall of sound" guitars? Confused Hmm...guess I've never noticed Switchfoot has a wall of sound. When I think wall-of-sound guitars, I think of those shoegazer bands like My Bloody Valentine.

I think "Taking Control" has a very pop punk feel, but in a good way.
It's light, catchy, and fun...not whiney and cliche.

I think Eisley is good at taking genres, and making them their own.
Like "Ten Cent Blues" is country soundin', but it's SO Eisley.

The people one is close to naturally helps define you. So yeah, the music helped nurture theirs, probably. But they made the music they want to make.

I think they blatantly copied almost everything good about the album from NFG and Taking Back Sunday. It's so obvious.
