Losing three in a row doesn't help any.

And losing 2 out of 3 to The Nationals ... those are series the Cubs need to win. But it's a long season, and still hanging on to first place. A whole lot will go right and go wrong over the course of a season.

Cubs now in second place, 1/2 game behind The Cardinals and 1 game ahead of The Brewers. Cubs play Cardinals for 3 starting tonight. GO CUBS! Edit: Not a good start. Starter Hill is out of the game in the first inning, after walking 4 people to allow a run in with no hit. At least the damage was minimal. 1-0 after 1 inning.

Rays are still hanging in there. You never know. Marlins made it twice, so why couldn't The Rays make it to the World Series?

Hey, how... out?

Twisted Evil

But on the positive side, glad to see your closer is as bad a ours. Of course Wood may no longer be our closer if Wood blows 1 more (we have Marmol in the wings, and he has been lights out in the set up role). Not sure why the Cardinals website says something about Isringhausen's problems be perplexing? He blew 10 saves in 2006 out of 43 chances. Last year was the fluke for him, not 2006. Wood was good at one time, too. Pitchers lose it. Happens. Hope Cubs figure out that Wood isn't a good closer before the Cardinals figure out that Isringhausen is no longer a good closer.

Okay, I take back everything I said about Isringhausen. Laughing Well, onto Cincinnati 1 1/2 games behind St. Louis. Not bad. Cubs were under .500 13-14 after the May 4 game last year, and were 16-15 after 31 games last year, and they won the division. So 1 1/2 games back and 5 games over .500 (18-13) at this point is not so bad. The team who beats the teams they are supposed to beat will win the division. 31 games down, 131 games to go in the regular season. Then it's onto the playoffs and World Series... GO CUBS!

I am not much of an expert on baseball, but I am under the impression that, in order to make it to the world series, you have to win games, not lose them?
/sarcasm Laughing

in reality i am a big cubs fan and i really want to see them win. I was just maing a joke

Oh, sure Cub fan. Giving comfort to the enemy is what you're doing! Laughing Besides, Cubs have won more than they've lost (5 more to be exact).

Went to see The Cubs yesterday. Ted Lilly vs. Dan Haren. The match-up seemed to favor Arizona, and Lilly gave up a home run in the first inning. But that was all he gave up, and The Cubs won 3-1. Even Soriano contributed (RBI), which was nice to see. Marmol held and Wood saved it. Lee had a home run. A very good time out at the ballpark. Cubs beat the Diamondbacks (best team in the major leagues) again today. Going for the sweep tomorrow, Zambrano vs. Randy Johnson. Cubs have never beat Randy Johnson (0-12 vs. him), so hopefully they can sweep the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year, and get their first win against Johnson at the same time. Go Cubs!

Big Z is gonna tear through that RH-heavy lineup and hand the Big Backache his first loss against the Cubs. (Didn't know that stat, pretty sad!) Print it.

Cubs finished the sweep of the Diamondbacks. Nice to see Daryle Ward, Cubs pinch hit specialist, finally contributing. He was 0 hits in 14 at bats to start the season. But his 8th inning pinch-hit double on Sunday was the game winner, and his pinch-hit single on Saturday tied the game. So nice contributions off the bench.
Zambrano was a late scratch for the Cubs, and Randy Johnson was a late scratch for the Diamondbacks (I think the Zambrano scratch may have been in response to the Randy Johnson scratch, and both could have been due to bad weather / late start on rain delay). Rookie Gallagher (just up from Triple-A) got the start for the Cubs. Zambrano is scheduled to start Monday now.
After the weekend sweep of the Diamondbacks, Cubs are now tied for first place with The Cardinals, with Astros 1 1/2 games back and Brewers 4 games back.

Yeah, I would've been pretty pissed actually if I had forked over some hefty coin to watch two marquee names go at it, then show up to a windy, cold & wet stadium and see Gallagher vs Gonzalez! Mad

Cubs and Astros have been on a roll lately (Cubs first place, Astros second place 1 1/2 games back, Cardinals 2 games back, Brewers and Pirates 5 games back, Reds 7 games back).

I see The Brewers today signed Braun to a long-term deal worth $45 million over eight seasons. This sets a new high contract $ amount for players with less than a year of Major League service, and makes him the richest player in club history. Not bad for a small market team, and probably a good move, except that now Fielder will probably want the same deal.

Yesterday, The Cubs signed Jim Edmonds (four-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove Award winner) to a 2008 contract to play center field, and sent Pie to Triple-A Iowa. Not sure how I feel about this move, as Edmonds was on the DL earlier this season and is off to a slow start (and played for The Cardinals 2000 - 2007 Laughing ). But probably a good move. Pie can use another season in Triple-A, and will probably be called up again in September when rosters expand (or sooner if any outfielder goes on the DL).

Pirates come to Wrigley Field starting tomorrow, as most of the league starts inter-league play. Cubs have the second best record in the major leagues (and they swept the team that has the best record, Arizona Diamondbacks). Cubs have beat the Pirates every game they've played this season, and 9 games in a row going back to last season. 1/4 of the season down. GO CUBS!
