i think you meant to put this, and the other one, on the general topic board and not the eisleyblog. that being said, i am in the process of reading that book right now. i havent seen the movie. but i will check it out after i read it. i find it interesting that harper wrote one book, became famous, and never wrote again. _________________ Wil's excellent description of me. wilsmith wrote: You're the Anti-Censorship+Topless Twitpic Parodying+Youth Group Video Directing guy that's a champion for the 1st amendment, Videogames as Art, and unrepentant file sharing... She's still alive. 50 years ago this month her only book was published. You want to understand why she didn't write again, here is one person's interpretation: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1289793/Dont-mention-mocking bird-Meet-Harper-Lee-reclusive-novelist-wrote-classic-novel-mesmerised -40-million-readers.html |

so I read the article. and i have two things to say, #1, if it is true, then Mrs. Lee, needs to grow the hell up. She is 80 some years old. Ok, you had a bad childhood. We get it. most people didn't enjoy the way their parents raised them. Fine people loved your book. If you dont want fame that is fine too. No need to be a sour puss because of your situation in life that you created. #2 (which is i tend to feel is the truth). If this is just a ploy by you, and the like of J.D. Salinger. The mystery is what keeps them coming back. then fine. but jeez you are old enough now. Lets be honest, you are going to die soon. why not celebrate the accomplishments you have made? There is no sense in going through life dwelling on the past. jd and her man, the first two emo authors in history. _________________ Wil's excellent description of me. wilsmith wrote: You're the Anti-Censorship+Topless Twitpic Parodying+Youth Group Video Directing guy that's a champion for the 1st amendment, Videogames as Art, and unrepentant file sharing... And he was a WWII veteran who landed on Utah Beach on D-day, maybe some PTSD? Who knows? But the fact is they both have a right to live their lives as they see fit (or lived in the case of J.D.). America is beautiful like that. |

I had to read the book for school as well (just once, as a freshman in high school) and I loved it. But I guess that in the US you spend much more time and energy on it, and I think is one of those books that are not that suitable for class discussions aside from mentioning background history. When you read it you understand and experience well enough everything that there is to it without the need of discussing anything, so.. My English teacher at the time we read this book in school thought that it was brilliant of Harper Lee not to ever write another novel. She leaves the book to completely speak for itself. Besides, it seems that writing wasn't really her thing that much. Otherwise she would not be able to stop herself from writing and publishing more. There is also a theory that Capote wrote it for her but I would never believe that. |
