There is an equation for this:

good press (a) + more good press (2a) { subsequent added exposure (b) } / pre-existing hater(x){ reactionary contrary-types that dislike anything seeming to gain steam (y) -1 } = # (n)of bad reviews that see the light of day.

a+2a(b)/ x(y-1) = n

aka the recipe for Haterade Wink

I asked a couple friends what they thought and the response wasn't so hot.

Quote:
The Valley is a decent song... 6/10

Smarter is one of the worst mainstream pop songs I've ever heard... 2/10

Watch It Die would sound great on the TRL countdown Does TRL still exist?

I actually think I agree about Smarter. That, Sad, and Better Love are all pretty generic and boring to my ears.

LOL @ the TRL one.

I wonder what TRL would be like today. I could actually see artists like Vampire Weekend and Sleigh Bells top-tenning it along side Yeezy and Kid Cudi type stuff--pop, but good pop, so maybe they're not half-wrong. But 2/10? Damn, homie. (Nevermind...that was probably two separate reviews).

I still say 'Watch it Die' the song they need to push for mainstream success.
'Smarter' is NOT going to resonate with people.

I agree...sort of. I think Smarter might resonate with a specific group quite well, but overall, a song like Watch It Die would reach a wider audience. There's quite a few songs on there that I think could do that, actually. Is Smarter for sure being pushed as the single? I sincerely hope not.

I think "I Wish" would be the best single, as far as reaching a large audience.

on some levels, i agree, but on others--why even try to bother to reach out? in this day and age, it is a major waste of money to reach out to radio. EVR has some good distro and word-of-mouth, obviously; trying to play the radio/exposure game did not work for WB. they're doing it right this time; the band will reap their rewards.

let's face it, the label can only do so much for a band. while there are obvious issues concerning production/distribution/promotion, the one thing that eventually sells the record is the music.

ps notice that WB still has their name on the album?

True. I mean, what was The Suburbs hit single? I'm sure there was one, but I can't tell which one it is.

They've always gotten mostly positive reviews. Multiple pieces I've read in the past describe them as "critically acclaimed". A lot of fans weren't into Combinations at all, and that record got many good reviews. Negative reviews are almost (I said almost) refreshing.

As for a single, I can't imagine. I don't have my finger on the pulse.

Yep. One of the first things I noticed... But it's talking about copyright and WB did pay for recording, correct? So I guess it's not horrible...

I know Month of May was, and I *think* The Suburbs (song) was.

When I think of a single today, for an "indie band," I really don't think of how much radio-radio play it will generate. I think of the music video and perhaps the possibility of play on specialty XM stations. The two most successful Indie bands last year--one of them being Arcade Fire, the other VW--both had singles that generated a ton of buzz, but never really got much mainstream radio play, and quite a bit of that buzz was the product of their music videos (AF's Spike Jonze-directed 'Burbs and VW's genius move to include relevant A-list sex symbols (one to even tap the beloved tween market) and other funny, seemingly random appearances, like RZA and Lil' Jon (although obviously not random). While both albums were acclaimed as a whole, I have to think their singles and subsequent music videos played a somewhat significant part in audience expansion.

I think it's time Eisley saw some of that. Again, I think Smarter could certainly expand their audience, but only in a very specific way.

I Wish would be a great single, in my opinion. So would Oxygen Mask. I think both are clear standouts in terms of quality and pop sensibility.
