" "In the books the Magisterium is a version of the Catholic Church gone wildly astray from its roots," Weitz wrote in the British Daily Telegraph.

But "if that's what you want in the film, you'll be disappointed," he warned. "

(Weitz is the director.)

I am quite excited to see the film! I think it looks like a real work of art.

I feel like I cannot judge this book yet until I have read it, so I think I will start it soon. I have been a huge fan of sci-fi/fantasy for many years now. Garth Nix being my favorite. I think that those of us who have always loved this genre are used to reading about worlds without religion or taking on a more aethist prospective. The ones who will show up for this movie are those of us that can see past these things and look at the book/movie as a whole of wonderful fiction and art and not linger on the controversial aspects.

Whether you'd like to believe it or not, the author is an atheist advocate. He wrote this book as a counter to books like the Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings, books that promote a triumph of good over evil, with his trilogy which denounces God and religion.

Read what you want, watch what you want and give money to whom ever you want, just don't be misinformed about his "intentions," or whatever spin the media is trying to put on it.

The movie had to be cut and redone several times, which in turn did a fairly good job of hiding the overall message. Do you see the gain in this? Unsuspecting parents take their children to see an animated movie over Christmas break, they don't know the actual story behind the book and don't understand the hidden message and to promote reading, buy the book for their children for Christmas, which in turn leaves their children reading a book about killing God and keeps spreading that good ol' message of hate and anarchism all at the same time. It's all about the agenda and the dollar signs at the end anyway.

And stop going on about this thread "not being on topic." It is on topic because it's discussing the author, the message and the meaning behind the.....BOOK. Just because it's something you don't want to hear or you don't agree with doesn't mean it's not allowed to be said and or discussed.

Jeeeez.

I have read this hypothetical situation over and over again, and it never gets less absurd. First, any parent that buys a book for their children without looking into the story, regardless of whether it's been watered down in a film adaptation, is a moron. Second, give children some credit; they're a lot smarter than everyone chalks them up to be and they really can differentiate between fiction and reality. Third, you need to go back in this thread and read Mister_Pine's explanation of what ACTUALLY happens in the end of the third book.

I'm really tired of mouthy, uninformed people trying to tell me that the media that excites me is going to bring about a plague of atheism in our nation's children. I know Pullman has publicly stated that his agenda is to get kids to kill God. Those books and films will not accomplish that.

Isaac made me do it.
