Don't know if this has been posted before. If so, many apologies... Quote: Poised and polished, Brittney Maddox is eager for audiences
November 19, 2004 By Jennifer Flowers jenniferflowers@gannett.com Fans of singer/songwriter Brittney Maddox gush about her goose bump-inducing, silvery sweet voice and her haunting, emotive melodies. That is, if they can manage to catch her at a show. Maddox, an 18-year-old freshman at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, is at the purest stage of her musicianship right now, having developed a unique sound but still shaky on her feet when it comes to getting her name out. She started performing about a year ago during open-mic nights at 516 Soundstage while attending Airline High School. She admits, though, she was certain that when she looked up from her guitar she'd find comfort in the faces of friends mouthing along the lyrics to her songs. But the Bossier City native is hungrier than ever for experience and is starting to tiptoe into more and more venues in Shreveport, Ruston, Monroe and area cities where her music might reach a few new sets of ears. Locals can occasionally catch Maddox at Alligator Joe's acoustic night Tuesdays. QUESTION: How'd you learn the guitar? ANSWER: I wanted to pick up guitar to just add to my voice as background so I wouldn't have to sing a cappella. A friend of mine showed me a couple of chords and I just took it from there about four years ago. QUESTION: How'd you learn you were a talented singer? ANSWER: Ever since I was little I would sing in talent shows and stuff like that. The whole guitar thing was something to add to my voice and help me write my own music. I started playing shows about a year and a half ago with a bunch of local bands, and it wasn't until I started going to open mic at 516 Soundstage every Thursday that I could actually play music and write my own songs. It helped me practice and it helped me play in front of people and write better music. QUESTION: What got you into singing/songwriting? ANSWER: I think I was just really tired of playing covers, and I wanted to express myself. I just listened to how other people wrote their music and what they had to say through their music. My first song was horrible and really cheesy, but you learn with practice. It's still a task to write a song, but they're a lot better. They're what I want now. QUESTION: Who are your influences? ANSWER: My voice is influenced by a lot of female artists, such as a band called Eisley. And bands like The Sundays ... I always loved Dolly Parton so I do a lot of Dolly Parton covers. And Rilo Kiley. That's my favorite band, and they influence how I write sometimes. QUESTION: Why do you think you tend to write more pensive, sad pieces? ANSWER: It's usually the tone of my music because I have a hard time being easygoing about music. It's just such a serious thing for me. But I'm tying to learn how to write more laid-back, less-intense songs because I listen to that kind of music, but it's just really hard for me to do that. QUESTION: What are you doing with your music lately? ANSWER: I'm trying to learn other instruments and get involved with other musicians. "ยป Right now I'm hopefully going to be done recording a five-song demo with my friend John Adams. He's an incredible musician. He'll be playing banjo and the slide guitar. It's going to be cheesy and kind of cheap but it's going to be awesome. QUESTION: How do you like performing? ANSWER: I don't enjoy playing shows, to tell you the truth. I don't at all but, afterwards I feel a lot better for having done it. I just get real nervous and real shy. But once I get up there I'm all right. It's just the whole build up of the show that I just really do not enjoy one bit. QUESTION: Why is it worth all the trouble to be a songwriter? ANSWER: You go through something and you write a song about it. You play it so that maybe someone in the audience will benefit from it or relate to it, and that's just how people get inspired. And that's how people actually make a difference, is by inspiring other people. Countless songs I've written from personal experience, like from my parents' divorce, and people have come up to me and say, "that really touched me," and "keep doing what you're doing." That's when you really know you've done something right. _________________ mojo shivers xiong ci sha shou ![]()

Any help with this? It takes a lot for me to notice a new artist. But when you list Eisley and Rilo Kiley as influences you've pretty much sold me on checking you out. _________________ mojo shivers xiong ci sha shou ![]()
