why do people have to label a bands sound??? i don't do that any more because there is no point...i don't think you can define a sound with a name...i just think is it good or bad music... like the use for the word "emo" anysong can be emo..."i wasnt prepared"could be labeled a emo song cause its slow and kinda sad sounding...but its not its an eisley song... |

Heh... darn it - I thought this would be on labelling human being into groups. I did an exam on that today. No I don't think you can define a sound with a name - I guess such labels are used for the purpose of efficiency. _________________ "A little less love, a little more common decency." - Kurt Vonnegut |

It's to ease conversations about music. "What kind of band are they?" Well, you kinda have to call them something for the sake of discussion... because they could be a jam band, an emo band, a hardcore band, indie-pop. Some bands really do fall within the generally accepted sound of certain genres too. edit: When in doubt, just call something "indie". I think that people are mostly aware that when something is "indie" it could mean a lot of things. Indie could at times indicate a certain sound, that jangly, guitar driven rock like bands such as Pavement, Built to Spill and such... but I think that in general when I hear something labelled as "indie", I just assume that it could sound like anything, but probably not super-slick, processed commercial rock. |

It is, for lack of a better term, natural that we label things so that our world makes sense, and that's also true about music...but the beautiful thing about music is that many bands, like Eisley, transcend labels or classifications. Some of the best bands I listen to can't be classified, not really. I guess you can say, "Well, Eisley's sort of..." or "The Tragically Hip sound like..." or "They call the Queens of the Stone Age...", but that's like picking one quality of a person and labelling them by that. Great bands are always more than the sum of their labels. _________________ Believe/Verim VK #16/SM |

yeah i get what you mean... its just easier for people to reckonise what type of music they play... and it saves a lot of time to find their cds in the music stores. _________________ http://its-kitsch.deviantart.com/ |

I think it's useful when helping describe bands to other people. I just think everyone cares too much and takes it out of proportion. I don't care. They're never going away, so why both fighting about who's 'emo/punk/harcore/ect..." and who isn't 'emo/punk/hardcore/ect...' It's no big deal. They're just words. I wish people would let it go. _________________ my name's carrie and i love a good sandwich so if you have a sandwich, come roll with me! i'm gonna marry the mars volta. |

I on the otherhand am an avid, die-hard supporter of labels. Everything must be divided into groups to answer specific questions or to identify with certain things. For example, if somebody you just met asks you, "what kind of music do you like?" are you just going to respond by saying, "good music"? and if you do, then you both like good music apparently because everybody listens to good music because its all a matter of opinion and therefore everybody listens to the same thing, which in fact we do not. You label rap because it conforms to a certain style. You label rock what it is for the same reason. Then there comes a need for sub-division when the elements are there, but there is a tendency to stray to newer or different elements for whatever reasons. The bottom line I'm trying hard to get at is that you can't just generalize things otherwise nobody will understand, unless that's what you want to do. What kind of music do I like? Good music. And my good music is probably different than your good music, but how would you know? You have no clue! See how labels would have been useful at that moment?! _________________ ...life should sparkle and rush, burn with fire hot like melting steel, like freeze-burn from a comet. |

Labels can be useful but they can also work against you. Labels create a lot of barriers. _________________ Thistledown |

The problem with labelling music, to me, is that musical tastes are as individual as fingerprints, so what sounds "good" to one person may sound like "crap" to their closest friend. I find that I'm lucky if I share a couple of mutually-liked bands with my best friends. And even I'm surprised when I read musical debates on various "official" websites when bands change: I thought that At the Drive In was brilliant, but I can't quite wrap my head around the Mars Volta, and here some people think that they're amazing, and others...not so cool... I was at a Queens of the Stone Age concert in April, and some of the fans wanted to know where Nick Oliveri was; others were angry because Mark Lannegan wasn't around; some still wondered if Dave Grohl was drumming... And then there were people like me, who had a blast. But music is such a subjective art...There are certain bands that I despise, but I don't say too much, because one person's Mozart is another person's in-the-mail CD Rom--good to put in the microwave for five seconds to see the thing crack, but otherwise, not good for anything. _________________ Believe/Verim VK #16/SM |
