Hey, I see that Stacy plays a fender rhodes, korg synth, and an ol' wulitzer. I've been thinking of picking up a fender rhodes myself but have no clue what models are the best buy. I am thinking of something under $1000. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Though I'm not Stacy (even though there was some confusion surrounding that fact in the past) I know just the man to ask about this. I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

i've got a rhodes stage 73. those are the best for the cheapest usually. they tend to go for under $500 on ebay and the like. they all will basically be the same. the differences are in keyboard sizes: 73 or 88 keys, and in amp/ speaker configuration. many sell with matching rhodes amps and cabinets, but for most, any other amp will do. just look around for fair prices and shipping methods(they weigh a ton).

hope that was of some help.

Hey thanks for the quick responses. I despise all the electronic recreation of Rhodes sounds that is why I am so interested in getting a real one. I think Wilco uses them really well (especially on Being There). I'll probably try to use one next time I'm in the studio. Thanks a bunch. Cheerio

There is another Rhodes thread here somewhere...try using the search function.

I'd go for a stage 73, Mark I or Mark II. You don't need the satellite cabs, just get a decent amp or run it through a preamp into the PA. Price range is going to be anywhere from $300 to $600 depending on condition. Mine was $330, but I've put about $200 into it already.

I just purchased one of these for live use (the cp25 on the left):

It sounds like a mixture of a Rhodes and a Moog. All analog, fully weighted keys, and about 3/4 the size and weight of a Rhodes. Only 61 keys, but I'm not really missing the extra octave yet. Only $150, too!

Those Yamahas look pretty nifty for the price. I just might have to keep my eye out for one! Smile

If your gonna be doing a lot of shows, get a stage model. But if it's gonna be stationary for the most part, get a Suitcase with the amp. The amps are great and you get the famous Fender ping-pong tremolo with it, which really can't be underestimated for adding a little twang. It'll push you closer to the $1000 mark for a clean one though.

I asked the guy and this is his response:

Are you planning to gig with this piano regularly or wanting it for home use/studio recording?

Stage models= hernia. $300. - $600. price range. (depending on condition)

Suitcase models= double hernia. $500. - $1000. price range.

The most popular and plentiful models were the seventy-three key ones, although they also offered both 54 and 88 key pianos. Gigging musicians tend to go with the Stage models since they have removable legs, taking up less space so the drummer has room to ride in the van and won’t have to ride his bicycle to the gig. You’ll need to run it through a guitar amp or a PA system to produce sound, same as an electric guitar, unless you find the model that comes with it’s own satellite speakers.

Suitcase models feature their own onboard amp with 4-12” speakers and tremolo. Listen to Stevie Wonder’s “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” through headphones to appreciate the heavenly effect of true ping-pong tremolo.

Mark I models had a round top and later late 70-early 80’s Mark II featured a flat top harp cover, making it easier to stack another keyboard on top of it.

If you are needing this piano for home or studio use, I would lean towards a Suitcase model. If you are using it for gigging, go for the Stage model. If your wife is a huge, muscled woman with large amounts of facial hair and willing to tote your piano around for you, either Stage or Suitcase will work.

Don’t even consider the synthesizer models.

yeah. every synth version of the rhodes just doesn't seem to cut it. They usually sound closer to vibraphones than an actual rhodes.

I agree....most modern day "electric piano" patches are based on the first real synthesizer emulation of a rhodes which was on the Yamaha DX7. Unfortunately it sounded nothing like a rhodes at all. That's that nasty twinkly vibraphone sound used all over 80's records.

The cp25 is all analog and really does the job. Imagine the keyboard sound on Everything In It's Right Place by Radiohead and you're pretty close.

lemonade suprise... she's in the know. Great friends with the guy and his
family who refurb'd Stacy's last year. I know Bill probably wouldn't want
to be bothered...but he's the man. I should call him. Reference forum
thread about Stacy's Rhodes...let me see if I can find it. hod' on.

I couldn't find it. I just found this picture from the Coldplay tour when we
picked up the Rhodes while passing through Missouri.

Very Happy

Mr. Boyd-Thor.. are you ever going to tell me why the picture says Oshio, Mo?

Oh and, did you ever get those new legs on Stacy's Rhodes?

I think this might be the thread Boyd was looking for:
