Today one of my teachers at school started saying how horrible she thought it was that people fix their dogs and cats. I never realized how strongly I felt about the topic until she said that. I think people with that mind set are the reason why there are so many homeless dogs on the streets and in pounds waiting to be killed. They think "I could never do that to my pet. That's so mean, they know what's happening to them!" or "Oh, I'll just keep my pet at home, nothing will happen." Then the dog gets out. Some people even say that male dogs act much more aggressively if they are not fixed, which makes sense. I feel the same way about breeding, but that's another story.

I'm just wondering how others feel on the topic.

I think overall, they should be and it's more humane. But I don't know if that's the reality of the situation. Bob Barker would agree, though. ha ha.

Somewhere around 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in U.S. animal shelters because of overcrowding and not enough people willing to adopt from a shelter.
There is overcrowding because people won’t spend the money to get their animals spayed/neutered.
So, I firmly believe that people should spay/neuter their pets.

My sister’s boyfriend has a cat, and he refuses to get him fixed. My mom and I were taking care of the cat for about two months while my sister and her boyfriend moved to the west coast. My mom tried to convince my sister’s boyfriend to let her pay to get him fixed, but he just wouldn’t have it. I really don’t understand why he was so adamant to keep him intact. First of all, the cat’s urine smells awful when they aren't fixed, and then the cat will want to start spraying the house. We had to keep him away from our neutered male cat, so they didn’t get into fights. It’s just a hassle.

And there is always a possibility that your animal will get lose and mate with another animal in the neighborhood. Then what do you do?

We believe one of the cats we took in after my grandmother died had a litter of kittens when she was around 8 months old. What we think happened was when her family learned she was pregnant, they put her out of the street. We don't know what happened to the kittens, but the cat eventually find her way to my grandmother's house where she was taken in.

Now don’t get me started on how I feel about breeding.

cats and dogs should absolutely be spayed/neutered.

The procedure I have issues with is declawing. Declawing makes me terribly sad.

Declawing is terrible and inhumane.
My sister took in a cat that was declawed, and she didn't like to have her paws touched because they hurt.

I don't like that either.

Would you rather have that, or millions of animals killed in back rooms instead?

my mom used to have it done to all of our cats when I was much younger. I probably would've had issue with it then if I'd have known what was really going on. I"m really glad that a lot of vets won't even do that procedure anymore.

What about getting a dogs vocal chords removed? My friend's dog has that because she barked so much. She still barks constantly, but it's a whisper bark. It's kind of amusing, but I feel bad for it.

we had a dog like that when I was younger. She was used specifically for breeding but her owners felt she was "past her prime" and decided to sell her. We always had people get upset with us for her not having her vocal chords, and some people never believed us when we said it was her previous owners.

that dog basically lived in a carrier with little outdoor time before we brought her home.

Maybe we should start neutering 15 year old girls so babies aren't killed in back rooms. I guess that's not as serious an issue though.

What makes you think that they won't kill a stray dog that is fixed? Did PETA say so?

My dog isn't fixed and he's perfectly fine. Everyone can do what they want but to try to imply that fixing an animal is the right thing to do for all pets is a little much.

One difference is humans have the ability to control their behavior without such extreme measures.

Of course, most problems can't be fixed with blanket solutions. But the question was state in a general sense, I think. I don't think the issue is "should ALL animals be fixed, without exception."

This is a classic example of the False Dilemma fallacy.
