I also love X&Y, it is an excellent album! Their other albums were pretty good, from the snippets I hear, but X&Y is the only one that I currently own...perhaps it could be said that I am therefore biased...hmmm..Oh well, go buy X&Y people! Wink

aw, you're missing out.
A Rush of Blood to the Head surpasses the greatness of X and Y by miles. Razz

there are already bands that sound like Coldplay and are influenced by them?

This could be Embrace, Keane, or Snow Patrol
Thirteen Senses sound like this as well, I'm told
It could be anyone; it's so hard to say
Maybe this is actually Coldplay
'Cause everything sounds like Coldplay now

Sorry, I just can't let a Coldplay thread go by without making a reference to that. And this.

i always thought Coldplay sounded like simplified Radiohead circa The Bends with some Jeff Buckley vocal influence. i'm not the only one either. there was some funny Thom Yorke quote where someone asked him about all these bands sounding like The Bends and he said something like, "good luck with Kid A."

***edit***
i'm pleasantly surprised with this song.
they got away from the Yellow formula (the quarter note build up scheme)
and the Clocks formula aka Speed of Sound.
here's a stream page:

i like to sneak into the auditorium during the day and play the grand piano. sometimes people come in and sit down, but i normally play obscure things or things i've written, so every once in a while i'll play clocks to appease them.

i don't necessarily hate Clocks, i just don't like too close repetition.
i actually have thought Coldplay always had the potential to make a really great time withstanding album and Violet Hill is interesting enough to not squash my hopes yet.

i don't really like it, but it's something i know 99% of the population has heard of.

something about that guitar riff/solo sounded familiar and i think i've figured it out;

think the riff in Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out, but maybe in a different scale or key.

Has anyone downloaded their new song, or at least listened to it? It is really good!

I'd love to hear more of the lyrics because it seems like they actually tell a story instead of stringing together random words, but they're drowned out for much of the song. Maybe once there's a 320 kbps or CD-quality version I'll be able to pick them out without all that stupid compression.

If you still haven't figured them out, that's what my Winamp Lyrics Plugin says:
Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow, white snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog,
became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below

If you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she silent still

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?

As for the song... Dunno, sounds okay and has some interesting lyrics but it's really nothing very special for me.

i'm impressed with Mr Martin there.
i'm anxious to hear something else from the album.

Thanks for that! Those are pretty decent lyrics, if you ignore the lame-o chorus and the U2 ripoffs. Better than pretty much any other Coldplay song, lyrically, except maybe "Spies".

For all that, the song itself still does nothing for me.

i think Spies is what made me get Parachutes.
it got all that press and i dismissed it for being too much like Radiohead, but i think i watched a Spies live video and thought, "you know, i should give them another chance."
