Only if you count me talking about why tracks are recorded so "Hot" nowadays as being a bi-product of going digital. Otherwise, that was more something that came up in the In Rainbows + OK Computer mashup thread, when Saellys mentioned having it on Vinyl and it being recorded to tape, that confused the mess outta me Laughing


Unless he was confusing loudness compression with lossy digital compression of the file sizes.

Well, one user has just as much power over what gets moderated as any other user who isn't a mod, so it's just another opinion in the mix. If I read every last word on this forum like I used to be able to, this thread would pretty much be exactly the same as it is now.

But anyway, back to things that matter: I am hooked on the new tracks, and think they are yet another positive step forward for Eisley. Actually having heard these songs in all kinds of forms, I don't really have anything negative to bring up yet, not that I'd care if I did or not.

Me too, but the analogy doesn't really hold in this case, imo.
There is no "cloud" out there in the public space... To the extent there is a notionally public "cloud", its the com infrastructure that connects stuff. Every place out there that you can meaningfully interact with exists on somebody's server, that they pay for. This server is Eisley's (or this corner of a server, anyway). They make the rules. They provide a space for us to play around here, and we appreciate it.

Otoh, there is an implicit representation that this is presented as public forum where views are freely exchanged and expressed, and this should be taken at face value. There is no issue of civic liberty here w.r.t. censorship, but there would be an authenticity and credibility issue that would reflect on the artist.

There are product sites that have limited forums for reviews, and make sure that only those raving about the product's virtues are posted. Thats OK too- its a valid model- they're not doing anything wrong... its just that nobody bothers reading them. Its immediately obvious that there is no fan community that forms in those spaces, so its a trade-off- you can't have both control and grow a fan community. Nobody wants to hang out there; its not interesting, and they yield no useful information- it becomes essentially a purposeless exercise in the case of an artist. You might fool a couple of teenie-boppers long enough to sell 'em a pair of jeans, but thats it.

Part of that trade-off is that, when only affirmation is permitted (or expected), what affirmation there is ceases to be meaningful and its value therefore diminishes to zero. This also has a tendency to be obvious. It is particularly inappropriate and counterproductive in the case of art, even popular, commercialized art.

Mainly I just posted that because I wanted an excuse to quote O'Brien. And Jamie brought up free speech, so I figured the topic was open game, though the analogy is not the most applicable. Wink

Still not sure quite how free speech came up though, because I thought last night's exchange was about compression, the cost of analogue, and the critical importance of making sure that things proceed smoothly and stay on message here at the forum. Or as we know, it could all end very, very badly.

So... does anyone know if there are any music videos in the works? I'd really like to see a new one come out. And speaking of videos, does anyone know what the first single is gonna be? I think The Valley would be a nice pick.. or maybe it's Ambulance because that's the first song they gave away to download?
