What an amazing 4 months it has been. TOP ALBUMS 1. Merriment - Through the Rough 2. Sucre - A Minor Bird 3. Eisley - Deep Space EP TOP 5 SONGS 1. Blessed Soul 2. Rewind 3. When We Were Young 4. Through the Rough 5. One Last Song THOUGHTS Merriment is more than I ever thought it could be. Makes me so happy to be a Texan. So much great influence from Country and Folk music of yesteryear. Huge Bonus Shoutout to "Tell It To Me" which probably has my favorite second half of any song ever. |

TOP ALBUMS 1. Sucre - A Minor Bird 2. Eisley - Deep Space EP 3. (Have not listened to Merriment...yet) TOP 5 SONGS 1. Laugh It Off 2. Chemical Reaction 3. Stampede 4. No Return 5. Endless Sleep (6. Deep Space) THOUGHTS I'm actually surprised...If this were a top 6 list, would definitely be on it. "Laugh It Off" would be second to "Chemical Reaction" if it weren't so gosh darn re-listenable. I love the Moss Eisley sound and the Sucre production, and I think Laugh It Off is the perfect blend of old and new. But Jeremy's arrangements...I want an Eisley/Larson collaboration so much now. _________________ Taylor | @thbrogan http://inconnumag.com |

TOP ALBUMS 1. Sucré - A Minor Bird 2. Eisley - Deep Space EP 3. Merriment - Through the Rough EP TOP 5 SONGS (in no particular order) - "Deep Space" by Eisley - "No Return" by Sucré - "Troubled Waters" by Sucré - "Sunday Morning" by Merriment - "Say Something" by Sucré THOUGHTS Eisley's Deep Space is a good bit of music to hold me over until LP4, but it sometimes feels like it could be more cohesive. That may not be the right word... "Laugh It Off" and "192 Days," while both good songs, just stick out, almost like they don't belong. "Deep Space," on the other hand, might be one of my favorite songs they've ever released. There's something about Merriment's EP that leaves me wanting more...of something. Maybe something more upbeat. It's great overall though. I can't wait for an LP! And I don't feel like I can properly express how much I am enjoying A Minor Bird yet because I don't feel like I've listened to it enough. But I am most certainly LOVING it. |

This is basically the Stacy appreciation thread (much deserved) with a little love for Christie (on the hook for Laugh it Off after all) and the occasional Sherri nod Statistically, given the amount of Stacey and Christie material out there compared to Sherri, that sounds about right. I'll vote when I get my Sucre' Cd (on it's way) and I plan on buying Merriment at the STL show. I like Guitar, and I like expansive sounds so I'm pretty sure it will go: Deep Space A Minor Bird Through the Rough Songwise, I know Lights Out and Laugh it Off are going to be Top 5, beyond that who knows, but I gotta give Christie an edge going in. Her songs break my heart in a way Eisley rarely does (Kind being the exception). _________________ yup, that's my name. Albums : 1. Sucre - A Minor Bird 2. Eisley - Deep Space (Haven't heard Merriment) ** I like Deep Space, but as a cohesive album, there's more songs on A Minor Bird that I put on repeat. Of course, there's more songs on that album so, not sure if that's fair. Songs: 1. Troubled Waters 2. Deep Space 3. Stampede 4. Hiding Out 5. Laugh It Off Honorable Mentions: Endless Sleep, Chemical Reaction, Persuasion. Even my ranking is iffy, but I know all of these songs mentioned are tops. I agree with marshkingsdaughter that Deep Space is great blend of old and new Eisley, yet I'm liking the production on A Minor Bird. I wasn't sure if it was going to be too "sweet," but I love how they balance the songs with strong beats and changes. This is the best "in between albums" time I remember from the Eisley crew! |

eisley - deep space sucre - a minor bird merriment - through the rough songs: deep space one last song say something endless sleep hiding out admittedly i have the merriment ep, but i haven't had a chance to sit down and listen to it. however, i'm not super into singer/songwriter stuff, and as much as i like some of christie's material, it borders into that too much sometimes. i like deep space over minor bird because i really like there being both guitars and piano. i was a little disappointed by the lack of electric guitar on a minor bird. i'm absolutely in love with deep space (song) cause i think it really shows where sherri's become as a songwriter, and what eisley is capable of (combining post rock and indie pop together with crunch guitars). i really just prefer rock stacy more. _________________ Oneironaut http://www.facebook.com/ChengBand |

I haven't picked up Merriment's yet, so... Albums A Minor Bird Deep Space EP Songs 1. I think that live version just solidified Hiding Out's top spot. 2. Chemical Reaction 3. Laugh It Off 4. Endless Sleep, I think... 5. Stampede or Troubled Waters. Can't choose. Thoughts What are those? I just have feelings. So many feelings. _________________ Albert Camus wrote: Always go too far, because that's where you'll find the truth. |

Not convinced that aesthetic artifacts can be linearly ordered in a consistent way with respect to preferences or merit, at least for me - to the extent they can be scaled at all, it would least a bit higher dimensioned than that. For all the Sucre love (which I definitely share- it is gorgeous, meticulous listening), Merriment definitely has its charms too (given it a couple of good listens), and Deep Space, Laugh it Off and One Last Song from the DS ep are all winners in their own way (the others on DS I can take or leave though, tbh). I still think Laugh it Off is masterful, but as I've listened to DS more, and in the context of the other current Dupree output, Deep Space (song) has been increasingly standing out for me amid the torrent of earnestness, for its easiness, whimsy, and general charm, Just enough poignancy without killing the fun. It has a great energy to it, and plenty of sonic candy. I could change my mind tomorrow though. |

I've always felt that with Eisley, they are a great band to watch live or to hear acoustically. I love the songwriting, and they're all (obviously) highly talented and creative musicians. But I have never particularly been in awe of the production. They sound SO MUCH better live, and that seems unfair to me. Granted, I do think they've been on the right track since The Valley, and certain songs on Deep Space (the title track, "One Last Song" and "Laugh It Off") even better than that. I'm torn because I prefer the grungy, expansive sound of early Eisley demos ("Over the Mountains," "Blackened Crown," "Lullaby," "Mister Pine") to nearly all of their most recent high budget stuff, but I would prefer to see them play the newer stuff live. (This has been bothering me for a while, but I shouldn't have suggested Jeremy Larson--his sound is weird but a little too polished for Eisley.) _________________ Taylor | @thbrogan http://inconnumag.com |
