I remember the Whole World real well cause it's still so different than most hip hop, it was out when I was Dj'ing, the only thing that was odd about was that it was a swing type beat and most rap is straight 4/4 simple beats. It was still popular though, because it had a catchy chorus. I think Killa Mike didn't really help sell the record either. As far as the videos go, sorry to hear it. Our public libraries are pretty good about making headphones available, so I would go there and listen when I was able to find a wireless sharepoint at home, cause my job blocks them too, though I have the power to circumvent for work purposes. these vids not qualifying. And yes, everything about the sing songy hooks and even Andre's intro are Funk influenced. _________________ yup, that's my name. Well, A few things all happened at once: I started hanging around musicians, took over at the Mom and Pop Record store for the proprietor while he recovered from a brain aneurysm, and got my first guitar. I also started back at the College radiostation, and decided that I would do a history of Black Music during Black History month, and went out of my way to dig up artists of color doing all sorts of music, not just Hip Hop, which my show was. I started with Blues and Spirituals and worked my way up to Trip Hop and Emo, which were the apex of what was going on then. Along the way, the guy who did the show after me and I became friends, and he did the Underground Show, and played a lot of Art Rock, we started blending our shows, finding artists who were in between Hipper, Electronic Type, more Urban Music, and Artier Rock. We ended up playing alot of Medeski Martin and Wood, Bjork, Unkle, Hooverphonic, and Jeff Buckley. From there the gates swung open for me. See, the crux of must hip hop was one or two samples repeated, with a scratched or recited chorus, 3 times in a row, fade out. That got old when you get to hear live instrumentation, and improvisation. So, the challenge was finding artists who saw the music being as important as the lyrics or image, and that wasn't easy back then. There were only a few producers and MC's trying to push the envelope, and I'd found my core group, so my standards were pretty high at that point. Once I got more into the emotional power of seeing, I started going back and just tracking down the sources for my favorite samples, and developing ear for the source material, which just deepened my appreciation for music, and the nuances of my emotions when I listened to it. _________________ yup, that's my name. That could be hilarious, or really really ironic, given some of them can actually sing in key... cause chances are none of these folks will be on a record label in 2 years time. Idol Winners have been getting dropped like flies, let alone mere finalists or contestants... meanwhile Kanye will be doing fashion week and forming a super group with Miley Cyrus and Jack Black. Good money is he'll be up there as a guest judge and school them on production and arrangements. People forget that he put together some pretty impressive vintage tracks for Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson, very retro-wall of sound type stuff. _________________ yup, that's my name. Sometimes they just perform and then talk a little bit afterwards. A Simon/Kanye word battle might boost ratings though. I'm not familiar with his Alicia or Janet work. re: Rap i think i might have heard one of the worst singles of all time and it happens to be rap. something about I Love College. sounds like Eminem. Asher Roth after my google search. _________________ I am Torgo. I take care of the place while the Master is away. |

We didn't talk about "Gay Fish?" on here??? I thought we did, maybe that was the comments thread on Rollingstone.com come. I actually was glad to see he took it in stride in his response. Asher Roth is getting a lot of copy on Pitchfork and Rollingstone and CMJ last I checked. Maybe he's got good management? Haven't heard anything though, and probably won't, which I don't feel band about. I tuned out on Em a while ago, around Encore. You get too old to be that bitter, can't afford the high blood pressure that comes with it. He is gonna be the Sam Kinison of Hip Hop when it's all said and done. When Triumph got the best of him ( I Kid ), I was cool with it. Robert Smigel as a Douche of a dog puppet is way more entertaining at this point. The production wasn't half bad iether. Now if he can be funny again, that's another story. Detox is supposedly done and Relapse, Eminem's record is going to be two albums over 9 months or something to that affect according to him via Rollingstone. They went back in the studio and did more songs. So if they did that with Eminem's, which is coming out sooner, there's always a good chance they'll do it with his an delay more. _________________ yup, that's my name. is there a Pitchfork equivalent in the rap world? where do i go if i want to know the latest on Detox other than wikipedia? btw - the South Park episode has a pretty close sound alike mock up of Heartless at the end. _________________ I am Torgo. I take care of the place while the Master is away. |

Since this topic has come up again... I heard the best quote about AtuoTune..."Nigga [T-Pain] you sound like you swallowed a harmonica!" _________________ Power is only pain It’s probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in. What do Kanye West, Jared Leto, and Brandon Flowers all have in common??? I have absolutely no clue, but I'm sure rolling stone will enlighten us all... http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/04/20/30stms-jare d-leto-on-working-with-kanye-west-its-slightly-more-than-unexpected/#m ore-9757 _________________ yup, that's my name. Asher Roth's record got a 2 something on Pitchfork today. Thank goodness. You said something about them covering him and it was hard to believe after hearing that College song (think if someone made the corniest rap song about college and copied Eminem while doing it - that's about it). _________________ I am Torgo.
