My feelings on the use of AutoTune on a lead vocal are as so...
It sucks.

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if used in moderation.

i had the BET countdown on and that Kid Cudi joint, Day 'n' Nite, came on.
i thought it was a pretty cool video and song.

through wikipedia i found a free download of the whole mixtape that it came off of. apparently it was released as a single over a year ago, and now it's pretty high on the charts. i haven't even listened to any of the other cuts.

http://10deep.com/KIDCUDIMIXTAPE/

i remember Kanye promoting him on his blog a lot, but i never checked him out.

it almost seems the hook of the song is when the hi-hat double times (prob wrong musical term).

I haven't heard the song, have read some of the hype though, and you lingo sound about right, and with most urban production, the hi-hat is what sets the tempo more than anything, and double-timing on a hook is a way to make it seem more energetic, so you're probably right. I'd check out the mixtape one of these days. Thanks for the heads up. Very Happy

A month later I finally get to responding to this, cause I forgot about it. Once I dug up the vid I recognized this song. i heard it on the radio one day a while back. It's cool enough, I was surprised it did as well as it did with the uninspired (on purpose) vocal. Backing tracks are EVERYTHING in urban music these days. Meanwhile...

Found this on MSN today http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-US&vid=b1c52c87-267c-401e-a6d0- c44e541b88f5

it about says it all as far as Auto-tune

ironically Kanye made a track that Jay Z raps on called DOA
Death
of
Auto Tune

the track is up on Kanye's blog, but i read about it on Pitchfork.

Rollingstone did a piece on it too, it's apparently an easy way to get buzz, attacking straw men.

We'll see if it pays off, or if there is a "Shut up old man, you're no fun anymore!" backlash.

You gotta wonder, if people still inhale helium and get a kick out of it, Auto-tune will always be around in some for or fashion, just for kicks. Just like Distortion on Guitar, it'll eventually shift from crutch to tool.

true.
like you said before.
what P Funk and others have done in the past with Vocoders, etc, it's not going to go away.

when it's used as an obvious effect it doesn't bother me so much.

i think it's when people try to pass off 'normal' vocals with it is that it bugs me - like on a normal sounding vocal on a pop track.

anywho:

since this thread was last active i've picked up two rap albums:

Dr. Dre - 2001 (on sale because of the Eminem album)
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III (just on sale for whatever reason)

Funny that this thread resurfaced now. Funny because I just borrowed 808s & Heartbreak from my brother because I really like the song Paranoid (I also like the video for it).

I don't love or hate the effect. It can be pretty annoying sometimes, but obviously I don't always hate it. It's just another tool a musician can use and, like with anything, it can be good or bad. I won't say too much because I didn't read all 11 pages of posts on this thread. Sorry!

Ma$e planning comeback, inspired by MJ:

Anyone know if he released a Christian album? Maybe his comeback album was clean - I have no idea.

I always love these.

I wonder how Michelle Bachmann reconciles the fact that she's a lying, fear mongering, hyperbolic sack of $#@! with the fact that she's a born again Christian.

new cuts and uncensored video.

luckily someone has put up all the unreleased jams on imeem. at least one of those with Snoop trumps some of the stuff on The Chronic/Doggystyle for me. just one listen through though.

also:

what about Jay-Z/Blueprint III - supposed to come out Friday but Best Buy already had em out (or 1 and 2 for that matter - i saw they are selling them packaged together - worth getting?)

Kid Cudi's album comes out in the next week or so.

Speaking of Auto Tune, has anyone downloaded the I Am T-Pain app for the iPhone? Auto Tune on the go. Hahaha. It's great fun.

Jay-Z pushed the date up to the 8th for whatever reason... Probably to get a jump on bootleggers and leaks, and it's in bad taste to release on the 11th if it's not a Tuesday by happenstance, he shoulda figured that out a while ago. It happens he released the first blueprint on the 11th, but his anniversary of a release doesn't Trump the other one. that J-hova stuff went to his head...

Meanwhile, the music on those records is top notch hip hop production, can't speak for the lyrical content, that's why I never got into him, it just didn't speak to me as a person lyrically. I come from that Conscious-Rap background, and I guess the bboy backpacker circles too, which Jay-Z got a pass on because he was so clever lyrically. The drug trade and hustling never appealed to me though. Most how live to tell about it try and just get out of it by hook or crook, and I spent a chunk of my life close enough to all that to want to bid it farewell for good ASAP.

Is it worth $2.99?

Oh jeez, I just saw that it has "I'm On A Boat" (for an additional .99 Rolling Eyes I might have to get it, though... haha).
