Laughing City

So here's the scoop. I spoke directly with a representative of Eisley's record label. Laughing City was released as planned in the U.S. on May 20. Nothing has been purposefully "pulled" or "delayed". The Canada release date was always slated for June. CD's are manufactured, and then given to a Distributor. They don't just automatically "get sent to every store".... the store (or chain of stores like BestBuy) has to ORDER them from the distributor. Stores have limited shelf space, and do not simply "order everything", especially from a new band nobody has ever heard of. Laughing City is only an EP, not an LP, and is not distributed by a larger distributor, but is being distributed by a smaller, "independant distributor". That means that unless your local store does business with that distributor already, they probably will not even know about it's realease, much less have ordered it. BestBuy.com and Amazon.com offered the CD for presale, but the BestBuy retail stores themsleves (at least in the Dallas region) didn't even place it on order, so they never got any for the release date. As popularity grows and more people ask for it, more stores will order it. Laughing City is hard to find simply because it was not distributed by a larger company, something that Warner Music planned on from the beginning. There hasn't been much promotion for this release. They want to build interest in Eisley slowly, not flood the market and MTV and risk overexposure too soon. Most stores can order the CD if you will ask them. They just didn't order it in time to have it on the release date. Later, when a full-length CD is released, you can expect more promotion. Hope that helps clear up any confusion! To state it more simply, "it's not in the store because the store didn't order it, because they don't know who Eisley is, and the Record Compand isn't pushing real hard to make everyone know who they are, not yet Smile

This makes sense, but doesn't fully explain why some people are being told (by indie stores, who presumably were told by whatever distributor they use), that it won't be available until June? I'm not disputing what you're saying, Kyle, just wondering if there's any explanation for that.

Is it a matter of those places using a distributor that doesn't carry Eisley, thus it will take longer to get? [That doesn't seem very plausible since most places I've been had it in their computer, just not in inventory]

Anyway.. I haven't heard anything directly about the "late release" but a friend has, as have a few others on this board supposedly.

Hi Sinead, no, i am not a fountain of knowledge...just made a call and asked some questions...it's more just a matter of finding the right person to talk to who can answer the questions! The Eisley show in Bend, Oregon was wonderful, thanks for asking...i will post later tonight with details of the trip! Yes, saving a spider is always a noble cause!

Gregor, i'm do not have a definate answer why some people were told the CD isn't available until June. One answer could be that the "original run" of manufacturing has been sold out, but they are producing more, and those won't ship until June. But i wasn't told anything about that. More likely though, they might not be getting it directly from the "Main Distributor", but from their "regular distributor", who has to get it from the "Main Distributor". The two-step or perhaps three-step process will take time to deliver. The store's "regular distributor' will provide paperwork or a "catalog" a few weeks beforehand, to allow the store time to order them. That paperwork will say there is a "release date" in June, being the date THEY will have it for distribution, not the CD's "official record company release date" All i know for sure is, as of today, in the U.S.A., Laughing City was released on time, and has not been pulled from shelves!

Ahh, once again, Sinead manages to forget the point of the thread....
Wink

And thank yourselves lucky my American friends...i am one of only TWO people in the UK who have heard of Eisley, so the nearest record shop to me that stocks Laughing City is approximately 3471 miles away!
If i start swimming tomorrow, maybe i can reach New York by the time Weston turns 21......
