Ok, after spending months working out in the summer Ohio sun landscaping, I bought a $3,000 Marshall Mode Four half stack amplifier for $2,200 from Guitar Center about a month and a half ago. The floor model from the store has been on loan to me until the new one they ordered me came in. The one I had them order for me has a 400 watt speaker cabinent compared to the 280 watt cab they lent to me, and they ordered me a new head to go with the new, larger speaker cabinent. Anyhoo, I got a call from Guitar Center Saturday saying that my amp finally came in and that I was to bring the store model in to exchange it for my brand spankin' new amp. So I loaded up the one I had which is a pain in the ass cause it's a pretty big, heavy amp and drove me and my friend Bob down to Guitar Center to pick up my new toy. Well we get there, and after waiting at the counter for a good while, they wheel out my new amp in two separate boxes, one for the head and one for cabinent, just as new amps come...in boxes. So after playing a few guitars in the store (how can you go there and resist the temptation to play a few guitars, I have yet to find a way) an employee from the store wheeled it out to my truck and me and him loaded it with the slightest care. Me and Bob take it back to his house to try it out, unloading it with the greatest care, and taking the two boxes into his garage. There, I proceeded to rip the plastic covering off the cardboard boxes like a kid opening presents on Christmas morning. the first box I opened was the smaller one that contained the head. I took out the head and noticed something different. The heavy duty, silver metal grill that is on the model head that I bought, isn't there. Instead there's a cheap looking, rough matte black finish grill on it. Whether it's even metal or not is still up for debate, if it is, it's not the same kind of metal that is on every other Marshall Mode Four 350 watt head that I've ever seen. The retarded thing about it is, you can push the thing in and out like it's barely attatched to the amp, that's not quite heavy duty. The more I look at it the more I dislike it. Now some of you might be thinking that I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Well say you bought a car from a dealership, and while you were getting your credit checked inside, the salesman that sold it to you, switched your car with a nearly identical car. So as you are driving home, you realize that the interior of the car is a different color. Now wouldn't that kind of piss you off? Oh, and it gets better. Having taken out the cabinet from the box and hooking up the footswitch to the amp, and playing for a few minutes, I realized a nice characteristic about the footswitch they gave me. Only half of lights on it light up. Above each footswitch button, there's a little red light that lets you know if you are using that channel or setting. For example, if I were playing my amp and clicked the button for the OD 2 channel, in theory, the light above that channel name would light up, letting you know that's that channel you are using. Only with my "brand new" footswitch, that just doesn't happen. By clicking the OD2, reverb, or solo buttons on the footswitch, none of the lights above those settings come on. Not a one, just an unlit light. Now some of you may be thinking that I'm making a big deal out of nothing, and that as long as the channel switches, what's the problem? Well say in your new car that you are driving home, already pissed about the color of the interior, ready to call the dealership the next day. You're switching over to the exit lane, and you flip on your turn signal, and realize that the blinking light inside your dashboard isn't blinking. Just to make sure, you flip the left hand turn signal on and it blinks fine. You once again try the right turn signal, still the same results, no blinking light in your dashboard. Even if you tail-light is blinking and functional, letting people know of your right hand turns, wouldn't you be pissed that the indicator inside the dashboard on your "brand new" car isn't working. I'm sure I would, but wait, it gets better. Already pissed about the grill and the footswitch, I began to load all my stuff back into my truck to take home. Me and bob each grab a handle on the cabinet, cause it's heavy and requires two people to move. I happen to glance down at the side I was holding and see a good sized dent, deep enough to rip the tolex covering on the wood. Let me describe this dent. It's about the size of a silver dollar (if you have never seen a silver dollar before, then you will be in the dark on this one) and about 2-3 millimeters deep like someone hit it pretty hard with a claw hammer. What I consider to be the most insuliting part of it though, the tolex covering where the amp was hit appears to be melted back on. Like someone saw what they did and tried to cover up what they did by taking a little piece of the material and melt it back on (like covering up a whole in a pool liner with a patch). Looking at the other side, I see another small tear in the tolex, though not as bad as the deep one on my side, an annoyance none the less. Now some of you may be thinking that I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Well say while you were inside taking care of your credit, in addition to switching cars on you, the dealer thinks he'll send you on your way with a going away present. One of the salesman proceeds to key the hell out of the driver side door while another proceeds to beat the f*ck (sorry about the cursing) out of the passenger side door with one quick blow of a claw hammer. Granted, a car doesn't come in a box and you would have spotted these things as you got into the car to drive off, but i think you get the picture. I'm going to have to call Guitar Center and ask them why they felt the need to ram it home (home being my ass) and give me such a "brand new" amp. Then I'll have to take it all the way back down there (a good half hour drive), load it and unload it, which is a pain, and probably wait another 8 weeks for another amp to come in. I better get some sort of discount for this, considering all the trouble I've had to go through to get the thing. I'm 100 percent sure the damage to the cabinet wasn't something that me and Bob did unloading, cause the sides on the cabinet didn't make contact with anything, only the back touched the bed of the truck or the ground, and its fine. So it would have to have happened getting shipped from Atlanta. Needless to say, I'm pissed. I haven't really even played the thing much to see if the thing even works right cause I'm disgusted with what I got. If I were to unscrew the back covering on the cabinet, I would probably find that there were only 3 speakers instead of four. If I were to unscrew the back of the head, I'd probably find that the circuits were connected using foil gum wrappers. Not exacly "brand new". Oh well, I'll call them later today and chew them out, cause that's always fun. Hopefully, I'll get a new amp and a substantial discount for my troubles. This was more or less a copy/paste from my Xanga, with some editing. My Xanga is www.xanga.com/biggerstronger if you care to view it. I just thought I'd share it all with you and see if my feelings are justified. _________________ I think that it's brainless to assume that making changes to your window's view will give a new perspective.

I'm really quite new to the geetar world(i've been playing since february) but dang, they ripped you off baaad. It almost sounds like they gave you a used one instead of new and just hoped you didn't notice or something. I say ram into the entrance with your truck and load you up some guitars! Call them, immediately. The customer is always right, so take advantage of that. Be civil, but give them the whole story. Marshall anything should be a heavenly experience, and you shouldn't have to expect anything less. If nothing else, at least you'll have let them know how you feel. Anyway, good luck. _________________ My photography:www.jamiemphoto.com You can't spell awesome without emo...backwards! -Julie definingawesome (11:44:11 PM): Eisley shivers our timbers |
