You thought Hanson was cute—three young brothers crooning pre-pubescent girls and pedophiles with bubble-gum pop. Well, Eisley is nothing like Hanson. They may be young and mostly related (three sisters, a brother, and a family friend) but they are no novelty act and they definitely aren’t Bubblicious.
When asked who their biggest influences are, 21-year-old guitarist and co-lead singer Sherri says, “Bjork, Iron and Wine, and Radiohead of course.” On their new album Room Noises, you get some sense of a mainstream pop band, but on the other hand, you don’t. Those alternative influences aforementioned start to seep through and you realize that Eisley isn’t catering to anybody. All they want to do is make good music, and at that, they succeed.

Now flashback to 1998 to the small northern Texas town of Tyler. Oldest sister and guitarist Chauntelle is 17, Sherri is 15, drumming younger brother Weston is 12 and youngest sibling Stacy, the other lead vocalist and keyboardist, is 10. That was when the songs started coming. And for the record, the last name of the band members is Dupree- Eisley, which came from the original band name MossEisley—a reference to the desert city in Star Wars where Luke Skywalker first meets Hans Solo.

Within a year or two they were playing acoustic sets at their parents’ coffeehouse, church basements and wherever else would accommodate extreme minors. Recruiting friend and bassist Jonathan Wilson, now 21, Eisley soon found themselves performing in Dallas and on festival bills throughout Northern Texas.

In 2000, they finished up their first demo on a friend’s recording equipment, not knowing then where a few modest recordings would soon land them. “The songs were pretty bad but it was free,” Sherri admits. But, not everybody seemed to think so. “We had a friend who got hold of one of those demos and gave it to a music attorney that was a friend of his. He flew down, saw us live and asked us if we wanted to do some showcases. So we showcased for all these labels and just loved Warner Brothers and signed with them.”

Our Rating: 90 out of 100

There are bands that try to be “scene” and fail miserably. On the other hand, there are also bands that do not try to be anything but themselves and quietly gain respect, popularity and success. Eisley is one of those bands that most people haven’t heard about, but soon enough, they will be stuck in your head bound for repeat stardom on your iPod.
Eisley, a five-piece pop/rock group from Tyler, Texas recently released their debut full-length, Room Noises, on Reprise Records. Although many would expect an elementary and immature sound from a band releasing their premier album, these four siblings and next-door neighbor have been jamming out pretty much since they were able to do so. Stacy DuPree leads the quintet in the vocal department and will without a doubt completely blow all competition out of the water and into the next lake. Everything from the twangy guitar and mellow keyboard to the background bass screams with perfection and polish throughout all twelve songs. Eisley’s sincere sound can be compared to that of Coldplay, except with female vocals (which are amazing again). Their indie scene success will soon venture into mainstream pop/rock limelight. Do yourself a favor and buy Room Noises A.S.A.P.

TIMES RECORD NEWS WICHITA FALLS TX

Eisley debut doesn't live up to previous EPs
By Richard Carter/For the Times Record News
February 18, 2005

NEXT rating: C

Tyler, Texas, is best known for its sprawling rose fields and Earl Campbell, the former University of Texas running back.

But music? Not so much - at least not until youngish alternative pop band Eisley. Made up of the three Dupree sisters, and a rhythm section that includes their brother and a neighbor, Eisley plays somewhat melancholy pop music in the vein of Belly.

Eisley's first release, "Laughing City," was an inspired five-song EP that got them the opening slot in the 2003 Coldplay tour. Friends of mine who saw the show said the pop-smart group with its lovely melodies and harmonies clearly smoked Coldplay at its own game.

Six months later, the Tyler band released a somewhat less inspired, but still tasteful four-song EP titled "Marvelous Things." It's not a bad effort, but it lacks the confidence of the band's first recording. I blame it on the hectic Coldplay tour.

After a full year to recoup and put a follow-up together, the band has finally released its debut album, "Room Noises." Oddly enough, of the new album's 12 songs, four are from previous EPs. For a band that has been together for five years, that's not a good sign.

Plain and simple, Eisley should have had a stronger backlog of material to draw from. Groups with one-horse songwriters eventually end up playing lousy bars.

"Room Noises" is a pleasant enough listen. The problem is that the 12 songs run together. The similar songs on the two EPs suggest that might be a problem. Eisley management likely thought they could address the problem by employing five producers.

Five carefully selected producers should have created five different versions of the band.

It didn't work.

Furthermore, Stacy DuPree's vocals, which are sometimes harmonized with sister Sherry, tend to become a little whiny after about six or seven songs. She has a decent voice, but without dynamic range within similar songs, it begins to repeat itself.

Over the course of their new record, Eisley shows that it should probably be releasing shorter EPs that allow them to showcase their better material and their relative strengths.

If this review is a bit harsh, it's because "Room Noises" largely fails the band's talent and considerable promise.

Judged by contemporary pop music standards, the album's three good tracks and three OK songs are actually slightly above average. The problem is that these guys were supposed to be more interesting than the pop acts that radio plays to death nowadays.

Considering the eldest member of Eisley is still only 24 and the youngest a little over 16, they have time for musical growth. The problem is that despite their musicianship, which is ample, record companies rarely tolerate bands for long without hit singles or strong sales or at least a devoted coterie of fans.

I wish Eisley well and look forward to seeing the band play Trees in Deep Ellum, a favorite Dallas haunt of theirs. I won't recommend their new album, but would rather have listeners find the band's first EP, "Laughing City."

That's the band's work that I like listening to, anyway. Hopefully, Eisley's next CD will reflect some of that earlier, stronger writing and more assured arrangements.

This is Texas, after all, and we expect our roses to smell 100 percent sweet, not just half good.

This CD was loaned for review purposes by Hastings Entertainment on Southwest Pkwy, 696-8029.

Times Records News obviously doesn't know the facts. I don't think that the band wanted to rerecord EP songs for the most part. I believe that was more of a label/management request.

This one's for Boyd, who thought ChristianityToday.com was too sanitized and conservative to give Room Noises a thoughtful, unbiased, well-written review:

I wouldn't agree with your statement about how we do things here in Tyler.
