Yullo,

I'm a sixth year school student, studying Advanced Higher (the highest level of work you can do at school; a step between school and university) Religious, Moral, and Philosophical Studies. The course comprises two compulsory units and a dissertation. The dissertation can be on anything related to do with the course, and my chosen area, as it interests me is Religious Experience.

I aim to use the lyrical content of Eisley’s songs and Sherri’s artwork as a pretext to critique the views of the philosopher and psychologist William James, http://www.des.emory.edu/mfp/james.html, who wrote about his view on how religious experience happens.

Is there any way any of you can help? I’m looking for ideas on what lyrics mean, and connotations that Sherri’s artwork gives. If you know anything at all about William James, or indeed anyone related to him (such as Davies or Sigmund Froyd), that'd be great.

Maybe I'm posting this at a long shot, but as the saying goes, if you don't ask you won't recieve.

Ewan.

Should you really be focusing on connotations for a dissertation?

I just mean that connotations are usually a little subjective. I'd imagine you'd want to concentrate more on facts for a dissertation, but what do I know about it?

are u sure u want to use eisley though? i thought the whole idea of their band was that they dont put a certain message out there.. just write about stuff they like, so their lyrics don't really mean much? i mean there's emotion in them but about fictional stories and whatnot. and sherri's drawings just go to that same wave of imagination.
sherri's art connotations..hmm.. each one is a little different but they're all def on the spooky side, just the way she draws, sort of mysterious.
im not much into philosophy so i wouldnt be able to help you on that side Sad hope it works out.

Oh man, I have a Philosophy paper that's due in less than 2 weeks, so I feel your pain. I still don't have a topic, either, which stinks.

Anyway, I'm not quite sure how you plan on fitting Eisley into Philosophy, so I can't help you there.

yup, I see what you mean, but religious experience is subjective anyway.

Starnothing. I see what your saying, but I think that could be built into the essay, either saying that James' thoughts are completely useless because they fit into non-religious ideas, or because they're really good because of that.

Cheers for replying.

i don't know about william james, but i know something about freud.

and freud would have said that the lyrics to many funerals were an unconcious way of saying goodbye to jon. (where they sing goodbye over and over) death is a symbol of change, and unless someone died recently in thier family, death is just symbol of change. or maybe it was a conscious thing.

Sherri and Stacy claim that none of their songs are personal. They're all about other people, or made up people.

yeah i see what you mean, but i'm referring to freud's theory of the unconcious mind....even though they don't think they're talking about such thing....they are unconciously expressing themself...

according to freud at least. its his theory, not mine.

i could certainly build that into the paper.
