I've been designing quite a bit of merch and promotional stuff for my friends (who are linked in my signature), and I've run into some situations where typing even a short MySpace URL is too much to fit. So, as a former copy editor and a longtime designer, I've decided it's time that we consider the ".com" in MySpace to be understood (at least in print, where you couldn't just click on it to go to the Web site). Examples?

The full URL would be:

http://www.myspace.com/eisley

But we know full well it's easy to just go with:

myspace.com/eisley

And I'm saying now it's ok to go with:

MySpace: Eisley

It saves valuable character space, and sometimes changing font sizes is just not an option.

I think time has come to do this more effecient method. However, are some people just not in touch enough to know that the myspace.com/ part is understood?

I'd say people who are already Myspace users will know immediately what you mean. People who aren't, not so much. People who don't use the Internet (all five of them), not at all.

I had never visited a myspace before my arrival in the laughing city. So I would not have known. I am guessing it depends on your target demographic. Us older folk (Gen X and older) I would say it would need spelled out.

I think most people who are younger will know right off the bat what that means, but there are still those who have no clue what myspace is...or how urls work...

But I still would like to say that even a lot of the older people are being familiarized with myspace and that in order to get to a myspace homepage, you gotta type in "http//www.myspace.com/bandname" or do a search on their name after already landing on myspace.com.

So it's kind of a grey area.

Golly, Poster

for my mates band they just did "myspace.com/bandname" on badges and after a gig on saturday they got over 250 visits the next morning which means people knew where to go..

with myspace:bandname could work but if the band name is a touch tricky it could be difficult.

actually im not sure... hmm, am so undecicive today..

I knew that would work! Thanks for the real world experience there. I mean about putting a link on the badges/buttons, not about the format.
