I'm using a broad definition for both.

Classical = baroque, classical, romantic, MODERN classical (so like Phillip glass or Johnny Greenwood)

Popular = Beatles, nsync, Eisley, Radiohead, U2, Damien Rice, Midlake, basically just about anything that's a band or singer/songwriter

I guess I should amend the title so it makes sense.

I would prefer popular but, most of the bands I listen to aren't that well known. (That I know of)

Yeah, I'm refering to popular as the broad 20th movement of music, not the actual popularity of the music. >_<

Considering the time period I've been born into and accustomed to, I'm going to have to select popular music.

Yeah, I would say that something along the lines of modern or contemporary would have been better choices. And I voted popular.

I listened to a lot of classical music when I was younger, but I eventually grew to love "pop" music as I got older.

Oh, labels. Because I like the presence of lyrical content mixed with the variety of styles and instruments, contemporary/pop/modern music. Classical music is good, but why limit yourself when you can have it all in one package? Laughing

My mum calls Coldplay and Midlake pop: "you're going to a pop concert tonight, arn't you?" Given that I know that she doesn't mean, say, Atomic Kitten, Take That, Busted, or All Saints (my favourite pop artists, if you care...), she effectively means anything that's not classical. Music that is "popular".

She also calls Midlake "very musical". Given that she prefers classical I think this is a good sign.

(she likes Van Occupanther, I think).

But yeah... popular.

If musique concrete and electronic music not based around pop song structures counts as classical, then my vote is split.

I was thinking that as my example of how modern music can bring out the best of both eras.

To be fair, there is quite a bit of lyrical content in classical music as well. It's just that not all of us can speak Latin, German, Italian, French, etc.
