Hey,

My brother got a job as a DJ on a brand new radio station here at Washington State Univ. and he's playing Eisley right now at my insistence. He has a 6-9 AM slot Wednesdays and he just played "Marvelous Things" and is now playing "Memories."

The station plays only independent music. No top 40, no major label bands. That shockingly leaves out Radiohead, which ticks me off. That also leaves out Coldplay and REM too. But there's still a large world of independent music out there. I just started listening after getting home from working out, but he called and said so far he's been playing Polyphonic Spree, The Bens, Grandaddy, Neutral Milk Hotel, Flaming Lips, Long Winters... HA! and now he's playing Jonny Greenwood "Moon Trills" from the "Bodysong" score. That's not quite Radiohead, is it?

Anybody else get Eisley on the radio?

Well, Eisley is on Warner Bros, which is a major label, so your theory breaks down. Generally college radio is indie, but some major label stuff sneaks through, like Flaming Lips or Radiohead.

My band is currently on the college charts and in our reports I keep seeing Eisley well ahead of us, usually in the top 30. Go Eisley!!!

<shameless>If your brother finds an Envy Corps album at the station (it would've arrived last week) tell him to give it a listen! </shameless>

why in the hell would a radio station vow to only play independent label music. Thats retarded. I work in college radio and i just finished reviewing the Marvelous Things EP for regular formatting and our local publication. Ruling out any major label music from a format is just as silly a mistake as the commercial top 40 stations make by ignoring most independent music. Not to mention that there wasnt "indie" before the late 80's. I think you may be mistaken about your brother's station's policy.

I agree that a policy like that is just as bad as what commercial radio does. However, it's probably not extremely uncommon.

Rice University's radio station, KTRU ( http://www.ktru.org ), has pretty much the same policy. Of course, I believe it is an unofficial policy. Officially, KTRU's constitution says this, "Musically, KTRU programming will endeavor to solely feature genres and/or artists who are unexposed, or unavailable on, the Houston commercial radio dial."

The problem is... there are a lot of well known bands that get NO air time on Houston radio that also don't get played on KTRU. That's why I believe KTRU's unofficial policy is to not play bands on major record labels (although it happens from time to time). In fact, a former KTRU DJ told me that is the case. I think it's a bad policy. A lot of the bands people on this forum talk about get NO air time in Houston, and I think KTRU should play them.

Take a look at KTRU's top 35 playlist to give you an idea: http://bang.rice.edu/top35.shtml

They stream over the web too... if you're wondering what this music sounds like. It can be pretty strange sometimes.

Well, considering the bands he mentioned (flaming lips, grandaddy, eisley, etc.) who are on major labels, the policy can't be official

Good grief, that Rice station plays alot of compilations.

That's what I was thinking. Flaming Lips are on Warner Bros. That's pretty major to me.

Playlists with specific songs are here: http://noise.ktru.org:81/sheet.nsf/Default?ReadForm&View=setlists&Star t=1&Count=10

Sometimes they play really strange stuff. Tribal music... or very experimental music. I wonder how many people listen to it on a regular basis. Most Rice student didn't when I was there. Of course, interestingly enough, our campus didn't pick up the KTRU signal very well. But I do know people in Houston did listen to it. People would call in requests to the station or call to complain when something "too commercial" was played. Go figure.

I didn't even notice that! I saw that there was no period... but I assumed I accidentally erased it when I deleted the "Good grief..." sentence. So I stuck it back in... to prevent myself from mutilating your sentence.

That's funny... to me anyway.

yeah even if they have a policy like that it wouldnt be very strict because college radio stations really basically leave it up to the DJs to play whatever they want.... which is nice.....

I think you're right about me being wrong...

The policy states no major label music on the application, but I think they were attempting to specify no popular music. Elliott Smith is on Dreamworks, which is a major label, yet you can play Elliott Smith, whereas Coldplay is also on a major label, but you cannot play them. It's mostly arbitrary as to what fits into the policy.

Likely they were trying to root out crap like Creed or Nickelback. On the application, it says "leave your Radiohead, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin at home."

Oh well. It's now the best station in the area, in my opinion.
