Doesn't make much sense does it, as some of their biggest hits have been the less-loud ones: Today, Tonight Tonight, 1979. And yet, general perception is they're this raging, screaming band all the time. It's just easier for people to compartmentalize I guess. That's the main reason I can gather as to why Adore tanked, the songs weren't as pounding and people didn't want to accept it as the challenging record the Smashing Pumpkins actually made, since it wasn't the record people wanted them to make.

Billy's voice bugged me off and on, but I came to accept it in the way he uses it - as an instrument, coloring the texture of the song just as the guitars or drums do.

Don't they always show one complete performance and then tell you to go to their site and show part of a second one - it seems to always cut before the second song is finished.

I'm wondering though - am I missing the musical diversity of Staind, Puddle of Mudd, 3 Doors Down, and other groups like that or are they actually as crappy as I perceive them to be?

Usually the second one is cut off, sometimes they get a couple minutes in, sometimes only 20 seconds or so. I'm sure I've seen some complete 2-song performances before, but I can't think of who they might've been - Death Cab maybe.

My perception is likewise Shite-Staind, Puddle of Pee, and 3 Turds Down, so your Crapdar is working fine as far as I'm concerned. Smile

Do you think that Adore's lead single with lyrics like "whore" and whatnot probably didn't help either?

Then again Bullet with Butterfly Wings had screaming and lyrics mentioning Jesus.

Disarm is another quiet one.
Thirty-three was a single that I don't think did too well - odd choice, too - though I personally like the song.
Zero was a very rocking single that didn't do too well either that I can recall.

Puddle of Crudd
(i couldn't believe the "she effin' hates me" song was a radio hit)

I think people have a hard time recognizing the variety and depth of '90s rock acts. How many people realize Kurt Cobain's musical diversity, for example? Music is horrible at dividing into purely distorted/mostly non-distorted styles now, basically. It's not quite that clear cut, but you don't have many bands who are allowed the range bands used to enjoy freely. But that's a whole other argument ... I think.

Totally agree- but then there are these great bands like Eisley- And they pay a price for it. And other bands see what happens to them and say "we better get in that pigion hole, give it a name, and color inside the lines, if we wanna be rich and famous.

Although some of what I consider the better live renditions are considerably less quiet. This one is delectable...

I'm not much of a student of their newer stuff. Not that I dislike it, just haven't given it a fair listen. I liked Gish. It was just generally "around". But (and I understand this is an unfashionable opinion- or at least was at the time) I have always thought of Siamese Dream as one of the great modern musical masterpieces. ANYONE WHO LIKES S.P. AND DOESN'T HAVE IT SHOULD GO GET IT TODAY. It still rarely goes back in the rack. Its one of those albums I think everyone should have- I think younger folks maybe don't realize how fresh and different it sounded at the time. It was all the grandeur and theatrics of prog, without the corneyness.

Funny thing is, if it had come out later, someone would probably have called it emo. I can't stand emo.

Kind of lost interest at Melancholie, and never really picked it back up. Maybe it was the production (more compression?)- or that the fine balance between sentimentality and energy curved off in the mushy, sappy direction a bit, but it started to sound more like generic alt rock- or maybe it was that more generic commercial alt-rock by then had started to sound more like the pumpkins. Or maybe it was just over-exposure. It was everywhere. All the frat-*$%#s were playing it at every party you went to. Dunno. I listen to some of the songs again now and they're not that bad, but at the time i was like, give it a break.

Edit-
I do have to concede, though, that tonight, tonight does a great job of showcasing Chamberlin as the force of nature he is, junkie or not. I'ld be surprised if that isn't the most ecstatic frenzy of drumming in the history of rock. Especially impressive live.

Say did anyone else catch them on Kimmel? They almost got in 2 full songs, 'Tarantula' was particularly good but Jimmy looks pretty tired and Billy looks like he's lost a few pounds being on the road. 'G.L.O.W.' makes a pretty good B-side, nothing new for them. Maybe I'll have to get Zeitgeist after all, although this reincarnation still seems like the Billy Band rather than the Pumpkins.

I've had 'Hummer' in my head for days, I love the way it starts off loud and distorted, and then 2/3 through segues into that beautiful, extended guitar'n'bass segment lasting until the end. I bet that's what she's listening to here. Smile

I think I did. I forget if I recorded it or not.
If you buy Zeitgeist, but it at Best Buy. I think there are bonus tracks and a DVD and it's still a low price. I still haven't gotten it.

yyyeahhh
so, i don't know, but i am just confused.
they were filming at the Orange Peel for their 9 Day Residency, so why there is no footage on DVD of that is beyond me, because it was said that it would all be put out. hmm.. they also recorded at their Record Release Show in D.C. and at the Virgin Festival, and the past two nights in D.C. here (as well as the rest of this tour). Maybe later on they'll do something. I surely hope so... it'd be silly to just use the Fillmore. I mean, sure, that place looked a heck of a lot cooler than The Orange Peel, but Asheville, N.C. is the bomb diggity.

everyone is complaining but they really need to just shut up, and realize what a good thing we have for us (if you like the Pumpkins). jeez. they aren't a reunion band. they are playing new material; STILL writing new things. billy seriously writes like everyday. i am so grateful that for 20 years this band has been around making music and for the past, 10, i have been able to enjoy them. especially now when i am most appreciative of their music and dedication. everyone wants to hear "the hits" ...yeah, that wouldn't make them a band of now and today, and i definitely wouldn't want to go see a band that played just their hits. no thanks. my shows were flippin' AMAZING. the second night i heard songs i thought i would never hear (Soma, Galapagos, Cupid de Locke (to name a few!) Brilliant song choices. i will admit that the second night they weren't as talkative, but it was still worth every penny. i do wish people would keep their negative opinions to themselves. goodness. each show, it seems, there is some loud mouth d-bag screaming out what they think they should do; because they think they clearly have more experience. rant rant rant...

Here is an "interview" (barely) someone got after the first night's show in D.C. Billy makes some excellent points.

Also, here is when Billy brought up "James Iha" Oh lord...... it was awkward.. but funny. Ha. I just felt like the new members were going to throw up, Laughing .

Anyhoo, I should probably reread what I just wrote, but I'm tired so hope it makes sense! Ha!

i completely agree with you Kylee Janai

i think that the problem is that most everyone (or at least alot of people) are not realizing that they are real, creative, artistic, and progressive musicians! not petty entertainers that cater to the audiences every whim...

and about the long jams that people seem to get bored of...

i can understand if your one of those people that aren't into that stuff, but... being a musician myself, i feel that jams and improv are what being a musician is all about... its all about community and playing with other musicians...
thats what i feel at least...

wooah, way to many dot dot dots

i don't know who these heckler people are.
Ryan Adams gets them.
Jeff Tweedy deals with them on his live DVD - in a very funny way - he proposes on stage that maybe these voices are actually voices in his head.

were there a lot of people leaving early at any of the shows you went to?
