Since we on this forum have no fear of outing our cerebral quirks, I figure I'll force some fall dichotomies on everybody by grouping geekiness and nerdiness by some arbitrary, but specific categories...

Oh I left Dr. Who off of the first option... Infer it if you don't mind. Any person who can suspend disbelief to presume Salt & Pepper Shakers are threatening to anything beyond your Blood Pressure and a Nose tickle are definitely high caliber geeks, rivaling Nick N. a kid in my first grade class, and actual friend who wore Spock Ears his first day of school and ate Paste. He repped it hard, and this was BEFORE Revenge of the Nerds. His dad was a biology professor and the nearest University, and by 4th grade he was being pulled out of classes to see a counselor once a week.

I'd say Nipponophiles are more akin to Final Fantasy (and otakus and the like).

There are those who are into Anime, yes, but I've known way more guys who just wanted to learn japanese and go there because they thought it was just plain cooler in general, and had no interest in watching Anime , playing Videogames, or reading Manga. These guys were just into Japan hardcore on general principle, but honestly, I think they were after the women! Laughing

Short Answer: Vote Twice Neutral

If you like the star wars comics, but hate the series (a distinct possibility now that the prequels are cannon), they you are a fan of the comic book fiction right?? Honestly, everybody knows their own primary impulse.

It took me a while, but music won out for me. All the other geekiness was trumped by music. case in point:

I could not watch Star Trek Enterprise because I would hear that Diane Warren theme, and it killed the mood.

Dr. Who... that Original theme music... Killer, just killer

Who CAN"T hum the theme of the Empire...

so yup, I'm a music dude, even in the midst of the geekiness and nerdiness. And in the end, music cured me of the social leprosy that is unabashedly self centered delusional geekiness, and then Napoleon Dynamite came out, and it suddenly became *edit* acceptable *edit* to be so geeky people mistook it for being Gump-like in your demeanor and perspective. Confused

RE: *edit* "can't believe I omitted the adjective there, sheesh Embarassed

Computer nerds are supreme because their female-repellent (they just get in the way, anyway) knowledge and abilities can be used to gain control in the real world, instead of pretending to be some powerful warlock or whatever in a fake world.

And awesome, I like fantasy, used to do RPG's, coding and electronica and indie rock music...I think according to this everyone's a geek xD

And anime is pretty cool, I don't think it's nerdy, but it ddoesn't seem many guys watch or read it.

I had a hard time picking between role players and hackers, until I realized they're both the same computer nerds that should be hoisted up the flagpole by their name-inscribed tighty-whities. Twisted Evil No offense to 3/5 of this forum. Razz

Edit: And though I feel they're the nerdiest, I have waaay more contempt for the indie $3 bills.

Notice the last word in that category is "geek". Laughing

But seriously... well, not really, but yeah, continuing on...

As Pantheon4 put it... if you are not a Jock (or a slacker, burnout, soash, or greaser), then you are a Nerd or Geek, thus, those groupings are in a round about way, not nerds or geeks Wink

This is of course if slacking off, getting high, being popular, or the anti-hero cool cat, is their primary motivation in life. IF you slack off so you have more time to do something nerdy or geeky, technical foul! Surprised

If you get high because you are a raver and know everything about every drum and bass producer and release, you fit the music category... Technical foul! Surprised

Does that make more sense? I didn't even throw in Band Geeks, you know, the ones always talking about counterpoint, key changes, and technique? Guess they fall into the catch-all category.

Nerds & Geeks are useful and sometimes wonderful, but I truly believe there is a pecking order, as I learned in college. Nerds and Geeks would ostracize lesser outcasts as they congregated in mass because they could actually do well on placement exams and then cohabitate. It was like Lord of the Flies, with the most powerful Geeks and Nerds, using their influence to land jobs for their buddies, set up LAN parties and exclude others, and steal the women of less crafty nerds and geeks, who had crappy class schedules, no access to cars, or alcohol.

And of course, we all know some Nerds and Geeks stand out. In some cases by their utter ignorance that what they do is setting them on a one way path to Eharmony or match.com
