LP/album are the same thing. LP stands for *long play and is a full-length release. EP stands for extended play and is a release that is too short to qualify as an album/LP.

*edited. put the wrong L word for LP. woopsies.

And an EP is the middle ground between a single and an album. Just enough music to get you through...

LP could also stand for Laundered Polyester or Loosening Premise.

EPs are often also synonymous with Maxi-Singles

Which are releases that feature 1 song or several songs from an album, along with one or two bonuses you might not find on the album.

The term Maxi-Single isn't used as much as it was in the days of music not being online, and EP has taken over. That is why EP stands for extended play, often EP's would simply be longer versions of songs edited down to be single (2:30-3:30 was standard back in the day) length on an album. So you could get the long version of a song along with songs cut from the album, or live versions etc.

In some cases EPs still feature songs from an album, plus extra material, in some form. In other cases some artists EP's are used to release all new material that won't be featured on an album. There was a time where doing that would be called a Mini-Album. That term faded out too, cause EP is just easier to type and say.

The value of Mini-Album version of the EP has always been you wouldn't be getting the songs any other way in the near future. But... often EPs and bonus material are put together on B-Sides and Rarities compilations and in box sets somewhere down the road.

I kinda figured out that an EP was shorter than an LP a long time ago, but I never really knew what they stood for hehe...and no! Haunting is not an exaggeration as that's what my question did to me lol
