You know, everyone always says that, but I didn't really buy it until the last few months. This was the first birthday that I wasn't proclaiming myself to already be that age like, 3 months before. So, amen to that! Hopefully my years of complaining won't come back to bite me...

Laughing Wait until you start approaching a couple of those big decade milestones... the ones beyond which you don't so much "celebrate" birthdays anymore. You start coming to terms with being "that age" two or three years out. By the time you cross the line, you've been essentially that age for a couple of years, so you don't really notice. Very Happy

But trust me, looking young wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
Especially as a guy, when I was much younger, I looked VERY young for my age (not so much anymore- it does tend to catch up with you sooner or later). I always found it a terrible liability. Especially career wise early on, it doesn't make being taken seriously easier. I remember a particularly contentious meeting when, as a 28 year old project lead on a consulting gig, I had the marketing VP for a large (well known) company open by remarking to his cronies that I looked "wet behind the ears" and then ask me when I graduated. It was that kind of meeting, but frankly, I've had better days.

And that's aside from the foregoing years of being the guy with the most trouble getting into bars/clubs/etc when I was underage. There was more than one time I ended up walking home by myself (once or twice after having been relieved of my.... ok- TMI- never mind)

So I'm all for looking (at least) one's age. It sucked to be in my thirties and have people who didn't know me treat me like a kid. It was kind of nice when I started actually looking more like an adult.

I'm not sure if any of that applies if you're in Stacy's shoes though... in her field, its probably better to look as young as possible for a long a possible. Sad but true. Especially if she's setting course for the mainstream pop market. The cult of youth and the fantasy of immortality is alive and well in America's entertainment preferences; and we expect (no, demand) our stars to embody those absurd ideals, or die trying.

Ok, I'll tell an age story:

I was 5' 9" when I was 10 years old in 5th grade.
We moved to a town home complex and when I would meet kids and visit their houses to play nintendo, every now and then I would hear someone ask someone else "Is he Slow???"

It used to irk the heck out of me. I never considered that I was a big as many grown men, so they were wondering why this Teenager was playing with their 9 - 12 year old sibling. It took me until my late 20s to reconcile that.

Now, it wasn't just that, when I was in middle school, 8th grade, or just becoming a Freshmen, when we went trick or treating, one of my neighbors was a few houses ahead of me. I went to a door and the man was Irate, and said, 'I Heard about YOU, YOU should be ashamed of yourself, get off my porch!" "This happened again, and the person said their neighbor called them ahead of time!"

That jerk had told people I was a grown man posing as a kid to get candy. Now at 14 I was between 6'3" & 6'4". I still hate Halloween til this day, and I didn't hold it against that dude, but that was some mean spirited BS right there, particular the level of Bill O'Reilly-Like Heat I got from these parents who thought I was trying to freeload a handout at their expense as a grown @$* man.

So yeah, looking old for your age ain't so great either. Now most people think I'm 7 years younger than I am, but I think that's only cause beards have been in for so long that now High Schoolers who can grow em' do, and people can't tell you're old unless you have gray hairs in yours.Neutral

I couldn't grow a full one until I was about 27 Laughing meanwhile a coworker's son looked like freakin' Blackbeard his freshmen year of High School, go figure? Confused

I can see the downside there.

Yeah, funny thing is that I had always planned, when I got to be "a certain age" that I'd mess around with growing a beard just to see what it looked like. Then all the kids started wearing them and I said forget it. But if I thought for a minute I could get some gray in there I'd grow one tomorrow!

They (Well, actually Jeremy) gave it to me for free. He wouldn't let me pay for it.

Ugh, beards! But I'm sure yours looks great, Wil. Very Happy Also, I feel for you. There was a really tall kid that I went to elementary school with who also looked a lot older. At least 15 when we were in 5th grade. It kind of isolated him, but it seemed to even out by the time we were all 15. Well, not for me... LaughingI guess the grass is always greener, right?

I'm laughing so hard at you looking like a kid in your 30s, Inorbit, but only because I'm pretty sure that I share a similar fate (since my og post, I've been told I look 15 multiple times by multiple people...cool). The only good news is that I was trying on a pair of size 2 pants at H&M the other day and they wouldn't button, potentially indicating that I will at least be able to wear adult clothes by then. Embarassed Laughing

But, as I said, I've sort of come to terms with it for a couple of reasons: my age related crisis that I think is finally beginning to pass; naturally aging women aren't as socially acceptable as men, and I can't see myself ever being a 'Joan Rivers,' so maybe my genes will delay that a bit (but I'm sure family and work-related stress will make up for it), and...I guess I don't have a third reason. The cons, however, are still alive and kicking: it's deterred guys that think I'm too young (VERY young, in some instances, which can be a bit creepy if the interest peaks upon hearing my actual age); no one seems to "respect my authority" over the age of 10. At all. Ever.

As for the love of gray hair, y'all are crazy. I am very fearful of it, as my dad went 'salt & pepper' shortly after I was born (around 26-27) and I've split more than a few over the years. I'm not sure how that works genetically, but I seem to favor his genes. I'm hoping I'll go platinum blonde (seriously, it wasn't white--straight up Surfer Brah blonde) like my maternal grandmother when it's time.

Relieved of my...? I've been thinking of different possibilities, and my final answer is: an allusion to having the $#@! beat of you? My initial answer made no sense in context (or at all, actually), but I'm still laughing over it.

I laugh at the "Is he slow?" thing now, cause I sort of was, cause I never could figure out why they kept asking Laughing Perspective goes a long way towards healing wounds and mending fences. My neighbor though, I'm still a little bitter about that, but I was probably due for being a punk@$* kid myself.

Inorbit & Taruh, the good news is... People who look younger live longer*

so don't stress over it, it will only age you prematurely! and Inorbit is 100% right about "Birthday Prologues". 27 is 30, 30 is 35, 35 is 40/ halfway to 70 Shocked Exclamation

And besides, all it takes a a few Crow's Feet around the eyes, and that illusion of youth is kaput Sad

Grays on the otherhand, are tricky. In that case, I guess Anderson "The Silver Fox" Cooper is the rolemodel for youthful grays.

70% of perceived age is affectation and adornment. 15% is context. Since I work in a K-6, I have developed 0 ability to discern a 35 year old from a 45 year old. I think that's partially due to the stress of the the job, but mainly because we have all these kids 5-12 years old, and seeing them grow from knee-high to the in some cases their adult height, but without a doubt goofy kids, puts it all in perspective.

When I was hired and people found out how old I was (30) the women would say "Oh, you're just a baby..." Confused While I was thinking "I can't be much younger than you, what gives?" I sort of get it now, sort of.

*folks in my family tend to not look their age (but since the Baby Boom we expand horizontally as we age I've discovered Laughing trying to avert that myself), and I find some solace in that, but it also is heavy on my heart because my dad is 62 and my mom is turning 60, and in both cases the are either nearing, or past the age of their parent of the same gender. They seem to young and vital for me to even consider them being near the end of their lives, and yet, my father has been in treatment for prostate cancer for the last 12 years, lymphoma for the last year, and diabetic for 24, and has high Blood Pressure and Cholesterol . My mother has high blood pressure, and smoked well into her 40s, and both still work full time, and have spouses that at different points had their own major health concerns that have put pressure on my parents (divorced from each other since 86', married to others.) in the position to "carry the load" for their households... I don't know about anyone else (especially if you are reading ALL OF THIS blurting ) but thanks to Punky Brewster & Webster (both about spunky orphans who's parents died tragically) as well as the Outsiders my one constant fear as a child was that my parents would die somehow, and so it was my main prayer, right up there with World Peace I'm sure. So as an adult, reconciling the reality of my aging comes hand in hand with acknowledging theirs, and dagnabit, it's humbling and disquieting. But life goes on, you gotta keep living.

So, since I'm being super mushy and personal, I'll admit that one of the things that got me so stuck reading Trolleywood back in the day was when Boyd mentioned Kim's health scare back when they were initially recording Room Noises. It hit my heart so close to home, and I DID say prayers in that regard. In this day and age it's easy for people to shrink away from others when their lives are hard, cause that stuff is scary, mortifying. It reminded me of the dread I've felt at the passing of loved ones, and the fear that death my come calling my own parents etc. So at that point the amount of empathy I felt towards the Dupree fam grew EXPONENTIALLY. When things turned out okay I was very relieved, and a bit exhausted. Imagine how they must have felt. Then consider all they've been through since, it's nye overwhelming when taken in context.
