I like some of Nickel Creek's songs, are they country?

And Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker is country, and a good amount of his masterpiece Gold is country as well.

but when i normally think of country i think of someone like Toby Keith.....uber patriotic and cheesy.

It really depends on what you consider country. The crap Nashvegas is churning out these days isn't country. It's rehashed rock.

The old stuff is great. This is the stuff that you can only find on AM radio. It's the stuff your grandparents listened too. It was featured on Hee Haw. It was full of alcohol and pills and broken promises. It had pearl snap buttons and slicked back hair. It was both types of music - country and western.

For a long time I was 'too cool' to allow myself to enjoy the music I was raised on. I lived with my grandparents and my grandfather would wake up at 4 in the morning since he was a milkman. His alarm clock would be blaring WBAP (anyone remember when they played music?) and the whole house would soon smell of cooking bacon and aqua velva. When I listen to old country songs it takes me back to those moments.

Eventually I just accepted that I actually enjoyed the music and that's what matters.

I'm very open minded when it comes to listening to different genre's of music but I can honestly say I have never in my entire life liked a country and western song,it just irritates me so much
